You can go to a pharmacy store and get head cold medicine and Motrin. That usually lowers the fever and gets you feeling better in about three days. You can go to the doctor, and he can prescribe medicine for you, but its much easier to just go get the medicine yourself.

You're right, there is no cure for the common cold. But...you don't know what this is, and you do have a sore throat, a fever, and a headache. This could indicate an infection such as strep throat, or pneumonia, etc.
If it's a "cold", you want to treat the symptoms (acetaminophen for aches and fever, cough syrup for chest congestion and stuffiness, lots of fluids, etc., etc.).
If it's more than a "cold", you may need an antibiotic. You don't want to delay treatment or not see a doctor. If you feel that bad, something is definitely going on! Call your doctor to see if there might be some medication that could be called in to the pharmacy. The doctor may not need to see you in person, if you explain all your symptoms clearly.
Take care.....and hope you feel better soon.

You're quite right - if you have a viral illness giving you these cough and cold symptoms you may well do just as well staying at home and resting up, drinking plenty of fluids, taking paracetamol (acetaminophen) and generally looking after yourself.
There are a few reasons why you might want to go and see your doctor:
o If there is a suspicion that what you have might be from a bacterial illness for which antibiotics would be the best treatment - high fevers, poor appetite, mucky cough ... failure to improve
o If you want to try Relenza to treat the influenza virus. This is an antiviral treatment and initially touted as the cure for the common cold. The reason for it not being prescribed often is that it actually fixes influenza viruses only, and not any of the other viruses that cause colds (Adenovirus, Respiratory Syncitial virus etc). You'd need to take a test to find out if it is influenza or not if you really wanted to know, or you could just fork out a ton of money (it's quite expensive) and take a chance.
o They can sometimes help you out with miscellaneous things like sick certificates for work, or review of other comorbidities eg if your asthma has flared up because of your viral illness. etc.

The only thing the doctor could do for you is give you anti-biotics. But in turn that can also end up weakening your immune system if you constantly take medications for everything. And the anti-biotics would probably not take effect for up to two days. So it probably would take just as long either way. But I would suggest taking plain over the counter meds.
