http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html tells you what you need to do.
Get two passport sized photos taken, fill out the application (form DS-11,) and take the photos and the form to a passport acceptance facility (usually a post office, but there may be others near you) where you provide proof of US citizenship (birth certificate, US passport, naturalization certificate) and proof of identity (driver's license, US Passport, naturalization certificates, Government or Military issued ID.) They'll ask a few questions, you'll sign the papers, and pay the fees (it was a total of $97 when I renewed mine last year-$30 acceptance fee to the post office, and $67 for the actual passport, which went to the State Department.)
The passport was sent to me about six weeks later.

i don't know what the line fee of a British Passport is, yet i know at the same time as my passport replaced into stolen, i replaced into informed US passports were going for thousands of greenbacks. That replaced into back in 1997. i don't know what they're worth now. they could nicely be worth no longer some thing now that there are more beneficial safeguards connected to them. Regardless, i imagine any ecu passport or Canadian passport is worth as a lot as a US passport. Australian and New Zealand passports a lot less so because you may't honestly enter a nil.33 united states with them, as you may in Europe or North united states which stocks a land border with yet another/different united states/s.

In the place where I live, we get them at the post office. There's an extra room just for passports and the like. It's been a few years since I've gotten one, but I remember the price being something like $150. I hope I'm wrong and that it's cheaper than that, but that's my memory.

now that you need one for Bermuda, etc, lots more people are applying, and apparently the normal 6-8 week wait has gone up to 10 weeks...unless you pay extra for priority processing
