Uninstall the waste-of-storage RealPlayer and get Nero, DivX, or one of the other, more responsive applications. (DivX has free versions)
If you insist on using, in my opinion, a crappy player, then you need to right click the application shortcut, click Compatibility tab, then click the checkbox next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and change it to "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" and it will run as if on Windows XP.
You may also want to check "Disable desktop composition" if your computer is lagging during playback. Also, change the power mode, if you're using a laptop, to high performance. If none of that works, in addition to that, check "Run this program as an administrator"
However, you will have to click the Continue button to allow it to open every time you open the application, which is why I suggest doing that only if you must.
However, as always, I suggest Nero and DivX players over any others.
Best of luck and hope I helped!!! :)

To the answer below mine, who said Vista is the problem. That's incorrect by far. Vista has completely changed the way many people think of security, in my opinion a positive way. It's a very well running operating system that I personally enjoy and use on a daily basis. However, you can look at the countless studies that compare the features of Vista to just about any other OS as well as its performance running various applications. All that I've seen, and I've read many, many, many just for laughs, have all shows Vista coming out stronger...
If you're going to insist something, at least let it be true and back it up. Don't make a false statement, laugh about it, then run with your tail between your legs [saying this because I never get a reply when I disprove any anti-Vista statements].
If you don't like Vista because you are a Linux person, then actually use Vista for a solid week before you make your final conclusion about it. I've used Linux at work and I have to say, it just doesn't stack up to Vista's performance (assuming you're not cheap and have a slow computer).
Use Vista before judging... And to all others, try Vista before you take his opinion.

I'm also a windows Vista user. It is recomended that you are to upgrade your real player as soon as you download it. Most of the softwares are yet not ready to be used in Vista. Thus from now onwards do not download unwanted softwares.

QUOTE: "I have Vista?"
There's your problem. You answered your own question. LoL.
But I'm serious. Vista has a whole lot of software/hardware compatibility issues still.
