All chickens come from an egg, therefore the egg came first.
Egg comes before chicken and chickens come from eggs.
As both the chicken and its egg basically contains the same
genetic materials the question although a good teaser is mute. We are essentially talking about the same things.
One in an embryonic form and the other after it reachs its
mature state. Embryonic (egg) must come first unless we
appeal to the supernatural which is not repeatable or subject to proof.
Here is what Professor Brookfield said.
" He imagines two non-chicken parents getting together and giving rise to the first individual of a new species because of a genetic mutation. "The first chicken must have differed from its parents by some genetic change, perhaps a very subtle one, but one which caused this bird to be the first ever to fulfill our criteria for truly being a chicken,"
Strictly adhering to your question as stated , the chicken came first.
Than you for the question and have a pleasant day.

I laugh at people who say egg because egg from other creatures have always exsisted. LoL, do they not understand the question.
The question is the Chicken or the Chicken egg. Not an egg in general. You try to sound intellegent and rational but end up sounding like a tard. LoL But at least I get a laugh out of it.
Well, as many have said it is for sure the Chicken. The egg had to be produced from a Chicken, and the egg was produced by a Chicken. Even in the evolutionary theory a chicken egg could not have been had until a chicken actually exsisted. The Chicken that exsisted was born in the egg of another creature whose offspring had a genetic mutation during development.

the egg. And the egg came from a bird that was an awful lot like a chicken, but not enough like a chicken to get the name "chicken" yet. I think that makes sense according to evolution.

Since it's a poll, I guess it's ok to duplicate answers.
I think Heron By The Sea has it. The creature that hatched from the egg was a chicken, but its mother wasn't.
So the egg came first.

The chicken came first. It is really rather simple. If the egg was first, there isn't a chicken there to warm the egg before it hatches. :-)

an egg is produced by a chicken, so the chicken had to come first
why? I don't care to explain the obvious

chicken, because of the sentence structure.
This is a very old recursive joke.
Why people get confused I don't know!
Here is another one.
Constantinople is a hard name to spell. How do You spell it?
EDIT:
For pete's sake people! The question has nothing to do with biology, or poultry raising.
It is about the order of the words in the sentences. Sheesh.
Once again, Constantinople is a hard name to spell.
How do You spell IT?
I spell it IT, "I" "T"
maybe you are all just making fun of such an old joke being asked, that sounds better than thinking that none of you heard it as kids.

I say the ROOSTER was the one who "came" first.
Actually, the answer is definitely the egg. Regardless of one's religious view.
Eggs have been around for millions of years before chickens or birds of any kind.
And even if we assumed that the earth was only 6000 years old, and that everything in the Book of Genesis was true [snicker], we still have to go with "egg". Why?
Because chickens aren't even wild animals; we bred them ourselves from various pheasants. Just as we've bred cows from various oxen and poodles from ultimately different varieties of wolves. This is all backed up independently by written history, geology, and biology.

Creationists say God made chickens, chickens laid the egg.
Evolutionists say there was a mutation, thus the first chicken came from an egg.
I say both taste great fried! I have seen and tasted!
