Yikes. First of all, it doesn't matter what the grandmother wants. So long as the mother doesn't have any major problems that would prevent her from raising the child, the grandmother has no say in the matter. I don't know if this is a hypothetical question or not, but here are some good resources in case this is a real situation for you. Good luck.

The above website has a number of stories dealing with custody, some involving people who have been affected by socalled "Grandparent rights" . The fact of the matter is grandparents have no rights, and especially in this case when the supposed "problem" is that the grandmother doesn't approve of her daughter not being a christian. She would be laughed out of court.

Good luck to you.

She would be laughed out of court if she actually tried to legally take your child for this reason. If she was trying to physically take your child, I would get a restraining order against her. As long as you are not neglecting your child or abusing them in any way, it is none of your mom's business how you raise her. It is your choice, not hers. But know that not all Christians are bad, so even if you don't believe in Christ, I wouldn't badmouth Christians (or your mom) to the child, and let her make up her own mind when she gets old enough. Peace to you.

I think granny needs to examine her motives. Taking a child from it's parents for this reason is not acceptable. Being christian myself I understand how she feels about it, but she is going about it all wrong. If she wants the child to learn anything of it, then you mention it to them when they visit, if the child wants to know more and understands it, they will seek the answers. You dont TAKE a child from it's parents, that would scare the poor thing. If the parents aren't believers and dont teach it godly principals, then the granny would of planted a seed to be watered later. She needs to have more faith in Him.

Your child is yours. Do as you see fit. As long as your child is being well provided for, is not abused and is receiving the education he/she needs, then tell your mother to mind her own business.

She doesn't have a leg to stand on in court. I would get the heck out of Dodge and steer clear of Granny.

I would say that she has 0 pull in the courts in order to do so.

She would have to argue on the basis of child neglect, or gross incompetence on the part of the parents.

... Even then, she had better present a perfect home for the kid or s/he goes to foster care.

It is up to you to rear your child to know God. Granny probably
has good intentions and wants to be sure the child knows about
the God of the bible. Are you a believer?

I would take granny to court and have her taken to a mental hospital.

Good luck. Say away from mom.
Or does she have any reason to believe you are not a good parent? All this has to be proved in court. She can't just take your child away, because she wants to.

This reminds me of an episode from the 6th season of "All In The Family".

I'd cut off contact from her until she'd hopefully realize that my child is not her property, and that I wouldn't want him or her raised under her religion. I'd notify the police if she threatened a kidnapping.

Tell her to mind her own business. Grandparents have no rights or privileges in determining how their grandchild is raised. Grandparents only have as much control over these things as the parents allow them to. Tell her to butt out.
