the search speed of my laptop has diminished evry tym i clik a s' thing lately.what caused this?what can i do?

my laptop has been slow these days.everytime i click something online or offline i'll have to wait minutes before a particular window opens.please tell me what caused this, and is there something i myself can do to fix this?i use a toshiba satellite series running windows xp.thanks.

1. do a full virusscan-
2- It could be the case you have to many applications started.,
look what is in autostart.
