Why are grapes and plums the only fruits that have different names when dried

Not all dried plums are called prunes. Some dried plums are called "Dried plums." The ones that make prunes are a different species of plum. I tried to dry some plums last year and they were nothing like prunes. Same with grapes - not all grapes make "raisins." It depends on the water content and flavor of the grape - some don't even come close to making a raisin when dried - they are too watery or too hard when dried. I think just about every other fruit variety dries the same... apples have about the same water content as other varietys of apples. But good question!!

Well, raisins are sun-dried grapes, although they can be dried by other means as well. I know that dosnt answer your question, but I think 'raisins' are called raisins for no particular reason. I beleive they might of been one of the first friuts to get dried and put on the market, so, they were givin another name. It could be the same for plums.
