As above - with a healthy coat of primer such as Kilz.

Yes paneling can be painted. How you do it is another matter. I painted paneling in my kitchen, and I used a coat of primer and three coats of paint and it still has a yellowish tint to it. If you want the wall to be smooth you need to fill in the cracks...just use putty or spackling or something like that. Otherwise, you can use the cracks as texture. My friend painted paneling in a little girl's room and each stripe was painted a different color, so it has a kind of candy striped theme. It looks really cute. She also spackled and textured it in a hallway, and you can't even tell that there was paneling under it. It's all up to you. If you decide to paint it, I suggest asking your local home improvement store for a paint that won't allow the stain to bleed through. Maybe Kilz would be good enough for that? Good Luck!

You don't have to fill in the cracks-grooves. They actually form a nice symetrical pattern. Make sure the panelling is nailed down well. I suggest you apply a light coat of melamine primer to help prevent peeling, and to seal the panelling. Then, go ahead and paint with a good latex paint, as you would a wall. Just remember to use either a very thick roller, or a decent brush to make sure the paint gets into the grooves.

You can paint panelling. I'd fill in the cracks with wood filler, sand and prime the walls before painting the final colour. Be sure to use 2 coats and if possible, a tinted primer.

Paneling can be primed and painted, whether or not you decide to fill the cracks is up to you, I have heard they can be filled with dry wall mud and sanded tho I have never tried it, I just primed and painted the paneling, you can do a faux paint job on them and it will help to not make the cracks noticable, I done three step sponge painting on mine.

Pant paneling? Sure!

It looks very nice as long as you pick a nice color. Way nicer than sheet rock in my opinion. Lots more character.

You will be amazed how some crappy scratched old as dirt paneling can be made to look like a million bucks.

Cracks? How big are they? I would not caulk unless they are huge. Just slop paint over it. It will look fine.

As long as the paneling is not heavily polyed, paint should take care small imperfections nicely.

If it does have a clear coat, you might want to use oil based paint. Ask Sherman and Williams if that's the case.

Most paneling is stained but has no clear coat and takes regular latex paint nice. Its nice and thirsty.

Panelling can be painted very successfully! And the finished product always looks terrific. You will want to use a special Primer that is made to cover oil, stains, etc. (Kilz is one). Most panelling has been waxed over time. Then you can paint it any color you want. If you want to fill in the cracks, use spackle to fill, then sand evenly (alot of work), but I never did and I loved the results anyways.

Sherman Williams (?) sounds like an advertisement there lol...Home Depot has awesome paint...just ask them.

Good Luck and enjoy your bright new room(s)!

Paneling can be painted. You can fill the cracks (where the panels butt together) with drywall compound but it may crack later due to expansion and contraction. Easier to use a paintable caulking that remains flexible. Latex paint will also provide flex without cracking. (over the caulking)

I agree with your other answers, just wanted to add an idea. If it is the wood "board" paneling, pick your wall color, and paint every other "board" with the original paint, then with the ones left, I added a soft pearl glaze to the paint. It made a soft stripe without the pain of snapping lines. It looks sharp, and it was easy. My kind of project!

Yes paneling can be painted. but first you have to lightly sand it first so the paint will stick. i painted mine and didn't feel the crack and it showed though the paint, but you can get dry wall compound and take a putty knife and put it over the cracks and seams and holes let it dry for a couple days then sand smooth and paint.. you can also wall paper over paneling too...i have did it..
