If you have a good quality futon and not a cheap one, yes they are good for your back. It must be at least 6 inches thick for it to be considered good for your back.
Just a footnote: the Japanese, who use futons, do not have back problems like those of us in North America....hmmmmm..

No. Not for a 40 year old or older that is.
Maybe a young person might not mind. I think any sofa is better than those things. I feel the grates right through the paper thin mattress.

Not mine, but there are some futon mattress upgrades that can make it a little more comfortable. Look for ones that are over 10" thick. Some even have coils like a regular mattress.

depends, metal frames are bad...wood is good. And it depends on the mattress you use on it.
