Like Bucky said it has its attribude in the way the beer pours but in all sences stout is different from other malted beverages.

When you go to the bar or pub, and watch how the pour a pint of Guinness, there is why the widget is important, the normal carbonation regular lagers and ales has is due to forced or natural cabonation from the yeast in the brew, stout relys on a different method of brewing and thus has not the same level of carbonation and has to be dipensed in a totally diferent way, whether in be Guinness, Murphys or any of the various other brands.

that little widget costs the company virtually nothing and leads consumers to believe that they're buying a "special" product, one with a "smoother taste and creamier head" it's great marketing.
