Why do you assume it has something to do with being big, macho, and tough?
Maybe it's because they like chilli.

One of the reasons that chilli was used as an ingredient was to disguise the taste of bad or poor meat! Putting too much chilli in a chilli con carne ruins the dish, as it masks the taste of the other spices, such as oregano, that are all essential constituents of this noble meal. When I cook chilli con carne, I include a little sherry vinegar, as this stimulates the taste buds and thus greatly adds to the piquancy of the dish.
My Indian colleagues often keep all the poorer offcuts of meat from cuts used during the week, and put the lot in a huge vat on Friday to make Phall (a very hot abomination of a curry), which is then dished out to the drunks when the pubs turn out. What is the point of using prime cuts if the taste and texture is to be ruined by an overdose of chilli.
A few of us chefs meet up for a drink on Sunday lunchtime, (leaving the roasts to our sous-chefs - it's very hard to **** up roast beef). Some of us are English, some of Chinese ethnicity and some of Asian ethnicity, but we all have a chuckle over the drunks eating the clod end!

Friend of my hb came over from India. When he ate his fried eggs they been completely black because of fresh crushed black pepper. I couldn't even look at that site. I believe it is a custom. And, by the way, he wasn't macho or tough. He just used to that amount of pepper in the food

Really hot food gives you a real rush. Your blood vessels open and your face flushes and the fire becomes a tingle in your mouth after a couple of bites and a few swigs of your favorite beer. Unfortunately as we age our stomachs find it more difficult to handle the spice.... I'm not there yet.

It wouldn't be too laughable if they could eat a real hot pepper.
Let them try a Scotch Bonnet pepper or a bird pepper.

tis rather, especially when you watch them.
I tihnk it actually shows you're a bigger man when you rise above it, like you don't have to prove that your tough by eating a hot chilli.
