It all depends on whether or not you ran it hot and for how far and how long! If you just noticed the temperature gauge was climbing slightly over time and took care of the problem before a major over heating, I would say possibly! I have no idea what the blue book value is on the vehicle but sometimes that's not always the determining factor. You have to determine that along with your mechanic!
If you can't afford new and have to settle for newer used, what are you going to inherit?? May be worst than what you alreay have!

I have been there.. You need to weigh out all the pros and cons of fixing this car. After you fix this is more stuff gonna go wrong. Can you afford a new or new used car.. Its tough. I was there and ended up with a newer used car I got through a family member.. I put like $4000 into a 1990 Beretta!! In less then 2 years.. DUH

$1200 is to much. find a friend who knows about these things, buy the parts your self, and make offer for work done by friend. this should cost less than half of the $1200

OMG What a coincidence. I have a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am and just gotten similar news.

Both my brother and stepson who are mechanically inclined have suggested that we trade it in. It will cost $800.00 to get the car fixed.

$1200 seems a little high.
