The king charles has a shorter nose and flatter skull. It is a little less active.
The cavalier looks more like a true spaniel and is more active.
In the UK cavaliers are far more popular but they are not as well known worldwide.

Anwen has a great answer. I just wanted to say that my friends breed King Charles & they ARE affectionate, sweet dogs.
They're inclined to like one member of the family more than the others though ... they're not just 'anyones' though they are affectionate with others they reserve their 'best loving' for a particular individual.
In the UK they are currently classed as one of the Vulnerable Native Breeds

If you like the look of the highly fashionable pugs - then you're sure to like the looks of a King Charles.
They're also known as English Toy Spaniels.

both breeds come in the same four colours-blenheim-red/white, ruby-all red, king charles-black/tan and prince charles-black/tan/white. the KCS is often called the english toy spaniel in the US and canada.

cavelier King charles is a much better dog for tempermant and over all well being.
King charles dogs are not as nice and can be stubborn and not affectionate.
Caveliers are one of the best smaller family dogs.
