A septic hip would be very painful, resulting in a significant limp and loss of range of motion in that leg. There may or may not be redness and warmth in the groin on that side. The person probably would have a fever.

If in doubt, a bone scan (a special nuclear medicine scan) may be helpful in diagnosing it.

Treating a septic hip would require admission to hospital for antibiotics through IV and a consultation by an orthopedic surgeon to see if surgery is required to drain pus and clean out infected tissue.
