You can go to this site and see if your food is on the recall list for cats:
http://www.menufoods.com/recall/
You can also call a store like PetSmart and ask if the food you buy is one they are pulling from their shelves.
I highly recommend calling the store where you bought your food to see what lots are bad. There are a number of Science Diet Cat and Kitten foods being pulled from shelves that I did not find on the recall list.
Some of that brand are "Savory Cuts Ocean Fish, Chicken and Gravy, Beef and Gravy also for Mature cats and Kittens, but it is certain batches that are being removed. There should be a skew number on your can that you can check to see if it is among those being recalled.

Here is the link to the pet food company's site and the list of recalled foods. So far there is no definitie evidence of what happened, but it does not involve poisoning, rather something in the food itself.

Our 13 year old siamese cat had to be put to sleep yesterday because his abdomen was filling with fluid and he would not eat. This problems only surfaced less than two weeks ago. The vet did some tests including a sonogram and thought maybe he had pancreatic cancer but yet no cancer cells were found. We are not sure what he died of. The other possibility the vet mentioned was pancreatitis.
Our cat ate maxi cat soft cutlets as his main diet. It now appears based on what we have read in the Washington Post today some of this food may have had poison in it. We are checking with our vet about this.

I am sorry! I believe that was what happened to my cat too! She was only 10 years old. (still young to me) She was just fine up to the point when (stupid me) changed her brand of food because she had hairball problems- switched brands and then over the year I guess things just got worse. I feel bad because I DID take her to the vet. They were saying it was a food allergy or whatever. THEN I had to go away for a little while for military duty and even THEN my parents took her to their vet- their vet wanted to take blood work but it was too much money (according to my parents). It woudlnt' of bothered me moneywise- but it wouldn't of mattered. My cat died a week later. =( I still feel really bad. When I left her, she was feeling pretty crappy, but I was thinking maybe it was because I just uprooted her from her home to a totally new enviornment. She died 2 months after I left. IT was another 2 months before I came home again. There really isn't much I can say to make you feel better, just that I know how you feel. I live alone so it was hard to live my life in an empty appartment so I started visiting Petsmart once a week. I volunteered at the shelter. Sometime during one of my Petsmart visits.... I saw the cutest kitten. He was playing hide and seek. Pretending to be shy. BUT he sure isn't!!! So I adopted him. It took me a while to warm up to him. At first I thought it was a mistake to get him but there was something about him that caught my eye that made me get him. And I don't regret it now. I still miss my old girl, but my new baby boy (who I have had for a year now, named Sniper) has made things a lot better.

Yes, there's a major recall. Most are store brands, but some Iams and Eukanuba are involved. Read more about it here, with links to the lists of brand names (Special Kitty, Food Lion, etc.) affected:
http://www.msnbc. msn.com/id/ 17650075/
It can cause kidney failure.

Yeah I heard about that. It is all pouch and canned dog food in certain brands. You can probably google it and get the list. They are saying it is dog and cat food.
