I have a boxer/pit mix, and she is the best dog i have ever had. but when we took her to the vet, he said its the quiet ones that you have to worry about. no joke, my dog is afraid of everything, and i honestly dont think that i would ever have to worry about her hurting anyone.

The reason they are give bad reps are due to the idiotic people out there that believe dog fighting and abuse is the "norm" for owning a dog. It doesn't matter what breed of dog that you own, if it is mistreated, abused or used to fight it will more than likely attack at some point. Should we blame the dog? NO. We should blame the so called owner of the dog. It is all in how the dog is raised. I have owned several pits and they have been the greatest dogs I have ever owned. If anyone were to look up the breed "personality" they would see that pits are lovers and they are horrible guard dogs. My pit is the sweetest dog ever. My entire extended family considers him one of the best dogs they have ever come across. He is almost 4 years old and has never even come close to attacking anything. The only thing he wants to devour is his food. I don't know what your vet was thinking telling you that. As long as you show your dog love and affection, your dog will return the love and affection ten fold. Don't listen to all the negative people have to say about the pit breed. If more people, like you and me, owned pits - maybe they wouldn't have such a bad rep.

I believe that it is the media that give these dogs such a bad reputation.. Most reported "pitbull" attacks are not even pitbulls. Having said that I "have" witnesses a pit attacking people and even had my finger half bitten off as I was trying to pull a pits mouth open when it was clamped on a kids leg. This dog was not taught to fight, was not abused and was very familiar with the kid in question who had been over many many times and who had even taken care of the dog before. I do believe that some "pits" have bad breeding "interbreeding" that may cause aggressiveness but this is the same for any dog. The problem is the media has a hay-day when it's a pit or looks like a pit but you never hear about the thousands of other serious bites from labs, chow's poodles, ect...

They are given a bad rep because the media is largely choosing to present any active bite case that happens especially when there are potential bills advocating for dog legislation and eventual breed specific legislation. It's wrong and it is undeserved and I cringe to think that a Vet would tell you such a thing just because your dog is "quiet". That is ludicrous at best.
While any dog can "snap" at some time, any dog of any breed for any number of reasons, this is rare. Right now there are attempts to ban many breeds including Pit Bull (three breeds of dogs) and any mixes thereof or suspected mixes thereof, Dobermans, German Shepherds and German Shepherd mixes, Akitas, Rottweilers, to name some of the prominent selected breeds people what to annihilate because of actions of the other end of the leash.
People are now being forced to give up a family member, sometimes to euthanasia or to move from their homes, their cities and sometimes their states to keep their pet.
Here's a site where you can do something to prevent this from happening to your dog.
Meanwhile, if I were you, I would try educating your Vet on the breed or going to a Vet that recognizes that the breed is not some sort of Frankenstein of the dog world but they are loyal, smart, courageous, and loving dogs.

The boxer genes in her make-up is more than likely not going to cause any problems--but i have heard too many vicious attacks about pit-bulls. I believe the pit-bull breed is a changeable personality type dog. But this is true of a lot of breeds. My cousin (who was a pastor of the divinity) had a chow he owed for years to attack him. I have a golden retriever mix with a little chow and she is very aggressive, She has had animal control already called on her for trying to nip at the neighbors. Now I have to keep her tied if she is outside. So pit-bulls do get a bad rap--but still it seems they are in the news a lot for attacking children and some adults.
Maybe their brain chemistry is wired up differently to go into an attack mode more easily than some breeds. My sister has a pit and she says it would not hurt a fly. Perhaps it is the environment they are reared in.

They are given a bad rep due to the fact that when in the hands of a bad owner, they can turn mean, just like ANY breed of dog! My vet said that my rotti/staffordshire mix is wonderful and keep on socializing him. It's the owner not the dog that make it bad!

P.S. My old vet just retired at the age of 80 so if anyone would know I think it would be him

i did no longer watch the video, yet do no longer rather might desire to. regrettably, many pitbulls have attacked and performed severe injury or perhaps killed. they're very effectual canines, and it takes in elementary terms some poorly bred and raised canines to ruin it for the the remainder of them. because of the wear they might do, any and all bites or assaults from pitbulls are broadly suggested on and televised. those that stay life on the top of a chain 24/7, disregarded or abused look those with the main themes (as might the different breed residing a sensible that). i've got not got and function never had a pitbull, yet have been around a countless. those raised in the domicile as a kinfolk member are merely as candy as might nicely be, and that i've got considered some chained up that have been somewhat nasty tempered (can ya blame them). So i actually have faith this isn't any longer lots the dogs itself as those that very own them and don't be attentive to the thank you to good boost, prepare and socialize them. you will likely never see a information FLASH of "Jack Russell (or any small breed dogs) disfigures 2 12 months old youngster's face". yet I even have considered it ensue (with a dachshund).

My beautiful protective pitbull was taken away from me a few years back to be put down after biting the post man,
the post man was aware of the dog (from a sign on the fence) and because of his stupidity we lost the best dog we have ever had she was so protective of us and the yard.

i now have 1 female boxer
(the pitbul was a female also)

Our boxer is gorgeous and wouldnt hurt a fly

a boxer/pitbul breed would be beautiful

Pitbuls are given a bad rep from people who have been bitten (such as the post man) they probably rant on how agressive and this and that that they are, but they are not! they are just protective of there family!

Boxers and Pits have gotten such a bad reputation because of all the idiots who train them from a puppy to fight. They hold ILLEGAL dog fights against others who thinks they can win and get money. It is a disgusting act, and sadly, if someone is to "rescue" those dogs from fighting, they are already very aggressive and have to be put down. Other people will just neglect them, and have them because they look "cool". So they also become aggressive to humans because of the lack of contact. But as long as you love, and treat your dog with respect, she will give it back to you.

it is the quiet ones that you have to worry about, a nervous dog is more likely to bite out of fear and distrust . as far as boxers having a bad name i would think its more of their appearance than temperament, pit bulls however can be very nice dogs if the breeding and raising are done properly. pit bulls are a dog that when they become angry they dont bite they attack and this has set fear in many people, the whole breed has been typed as a "bad breed" in the vet clinic i work at the ones that are brought in to us will LICK YOU TO DEATH but seem to be really sweet, but all dogs are animals and all animals can bite .

Well the problem with those dogs is that they are potentially dangerous. They were bred to be agressive fighting dogs. And while they may love you and respect you, if this changes, something bad could happen. They are especially dangerous with small children and strangers as if the dog feel dominant over them it can attack them.

While your dog may go its whole life not attacking one person, those dogs if they do attack can do serious damage. If a small dog attacks, the injuries are usually not bad. If a large dog attacks, they will cause major damage. I know people that said the same things about their aggressive breed dog saying oh she is so gentile she would never hurt a fly, then they kill another dog. They are bred to not give up and attack to the death. I also know a woman that had her nose bit off by her dog while she slept.

I am sure some of the pitbulls are wonderful dogs, but why take the chance with something that can really hurt you or someone you love. If you have children I think it is irresponsible to have a pitbull living with you.
