A) You'll have to take the ASVAB, it's an assessment test, which shows the military branch you've chosen what your areas of strength and ability are... meaning, if you have no aptitude for electronics or math, you'd probably not get put into one of those jobs. Your local recruiter will have information on when the next practice ASVAB will be conducted in your area.
B) If you want to be an officer, you'll need a college degree. If you're just planning on being enlisted man, then just a high school diploma is required. Each branch allows a limited number of entries with GED's. (That's gonna slow your ability to get promoted, down the road, so get that diploma!)
C) Army and Marines work on land. Navy'll have you on the ocean, Air Force is... well.. the air force. All have land-based jobs... but the Army and Marines have a land-based focus.
D) Contact a recruitment office while you're in high school, during your 11th grade year. Don't commit to anything until you've done your homework, taken the Practice ASVAB, looked at available MOS designations within each branch, and have a really clear understanding of what you want to get out of your military experience. Think in terms of LONG TERM benefit to you... some branches are offering enlistment bonuses... but that shouldn't be your only deciding factor.
Oh... and just so my Marines get equal billing...

Go talk to a recruiter first. They can help you with all this, no matter what age you are, they will get you on the right path.
Getting a job in the military depends on how well you do on the ASVAB test and what jobs they have available.
a. yes, you take the ASVAB test
b. you don't need college to go, but you may be able to get paid more with some college credits. Officers need a 4 year degree.
c. Army and Marines are on the land.
d. tips for getting in:
get your HS diploma if possible, not GED, but both work i think.
stay out of trouble: they check your criminal record, they even ask about parking/speeding tickets, jay walking, drugs, etc.
stay healthy

Assuming you are talking about the US, this is easy. All you have to do is find a recruiter. You don't need any college. and they even take a small number of people with GEDs. You will have to take a test and a physical, but they aren't very difficult. As for working on land, the Army and Marines are the only real choice.

If you want to join the military, you just visit your local recruiter's office. Look at websites like http://www.goarmy.com/flindex.jsp for more information about joining the Army. You do not have to have any college.
If you want to work for the military as a civilian, this usually means you get a government job or work as a government contractor.

You have to call a recruiter, take the ASVAB, no college necessary - but you must have a high school diploma or GED.
Army stays on land.
At this point, the age cut off is 42 to join.

You don't need a college education to join the army, but if you have a degree, you can go in as an officer.
If you want to find a civilian job on an army base, you can go one of these sites: http://www.mwrjobs.army.mil/ or https://cpolwapp.belvoir.army.mil/public/vabSelfNom/index.jsp
