Sounds like a "charlie horse". Try eating more bananas-might be a lack of potassium.

I used to get these regularly when I was a teenager. I'd wake up in extreme pain with my calf tensed up to the max. All I could do was rub it for a few minutes and then it would go away.
A few years later it stopped and has never happened again. How old are you? I think it was suggested to me that it might be "growing pains".

It sounds like you are having cramps in your leg. I too have suffered from that before and it is very painful. I have to get out of the bed and stand on my feet before it will go away. Massaging the area helps it go away too.

You can buy some potassium supplements and take them and that will help and also eat more foods that have potassium in them such as dairy foods, fish , dried fruits, bananas, sweet potatoes, nuts etc.

Be careful if you continue to have calf pain it may be a sign of a blood clot. Usually they can not detect blood clots below the knee.
