Which city is the best to visit in New Zealand?

I am really not sure, as I have checked some websites, but there seems to be so much information.

But I think Wellington would be the best(?) cos that was where LOTR was filmed,and I am sure almost everyone who goes to NZ would want to check it out.

Dude don't bother with the North Island if you want to see beautiful scenery and see it with out the crowd head south. Christchurch, Queenstown and Duneden are the best places

Lord of the Rings was filmed in several locations in NZ.

it depends on what you are looking for. I lived in Wellington for a couple of years (am a Kiwi) and thought I really liked it, then I moved to Auckland and wow, what a fabulous place. It has all the ingredients of an exciting cosmopolitan city, without the litter and pollution of other major cities in the world. There is a great food culture, with plenty of sidewalk cafe's and enjoys a sub-tropical climate.

If you are into yachting, there is the Hauraki Gulf and most people who live in Auckland either have a boat or know someone who has one. There is many many islands to explore in the Gulf and you can often rock up to an island and have the beach to yourselfs for the day. There are also dozens and dozens of safe beaches, and also more adventuorous ones where you can surf.

If you are planning a trip to NZ, don't just limit yourself to one small area though. It is a country larger in size than the UK, so you will need a few months to truely explore it.

I think Wellington is the best. There's lots to do and it's a very lively city compared with Auckland. Plus if you're there for long enough, there are some great places to visit outside the city, including a trip to South Island if you have time.
