She is fixed and almost 9 years old. I want to get a puppy to learn some of her traits before she gets too old, but not sure if she would get along better with a male or female.

First there is not guarantee that a puppy would pick up the traits of your older dog. If that is the only reason you are getting a new pup please don't. Only get a new pet because you truly want the responsibility of that animal for life!

With a 9 year old dog through a Fixed male might work well but you might want to go with an older pup like 8 months to a year and one that has a personally close to the dog you have now. If your older dog likes to sleep alot and be left alone look for a dog from a resuce group that is calm. A good resuce group will help you find a new pup that will be a good fit for your home!

We've always had two dogs, one male and one female until now, and we have two females. This is the only time we've had problems because they both want to be the alpha female. When you have one of each sex you don't have that problem, so I'd suggest getting a male. All of ours have been fixed, but it still makes a huge difference.

A male would be your best bet. Males ussualy will fight with males and females will do the same and that is why you get one of each. Males almost alway get along with a female. Be sure to get the new one fixed as well!

Ok trust me on this a male is soo much better w/ a female because the females get jealous of other females and they like males a whole lot better

I'd suggest a male and get him neutered when he is old enough. Neutered male/spayed female combos seem to work the best.

My 11-year old female was a wonderful mentor to my male puppy a few years back. She died at 15 and he is now returning the favor to his "little sister."

There really is not a best gender dog to get.. You just need to make sure that the dogs are compatible. I myself would go with a female just for the simple fact that once a male hit's "puberty" he may annoy her a bit even if he is fixed.

Generally, males and femailes will get allong better than two females. this is because of how animal pecking orders work. They will first determine pecking order with in their own sex and then usually a female is alpha over a male.

Same sex aggression is common in many breeds of dogs.
If you are going to have two the best combination is always one male and one female both altered.
