They sell them that way so you can eat them at the peak of ripeness, as they ripen in your home. If they were perfectly ripe the day you walked into the grocery store, they'd be rotten by the time they rode around in a buggy, got drug across the scanner-thingy and weighed, bagged, and made it to your kitchen.
To hasten ripening, put a pear and a banana or apple in a brown paper sack and close it up, leave it a few hours.

Pears that are soft and juicy are perfect. If you are poaching a pear you typically go for one that is firmer. The poaching process makes them soft and the sauce you pepare them in fuses with the natural juices, makes them perfect with ice cream or fresh cream.

I haven't met anyone yet who enjoys eating them hard from the supermarket....but the reason they sell them like that is because soft they go off very quickly and become too soft to eat.
By selling them hard he choice is of how you like to eat them is up to you, is it so difficult to wait a few days before eating them?
To ripen them quicker just put them in a warm place then enjoy.

No I hate them! I hardly ever buy them now because they're always rock hard and they usually go off before they're fit to eat. A pear isn't decent unless the juice runs down your chin when you bite into it.

Amen brother! I of course like soft and juicy ones, but it is difficult to find them during the off season.. so if you are really desperate you deal with it or buy canned ones.

Pears should have the consistency of tempered haagen dazs ice cream if they're being eaten out of hand. Firm pears are best for stewing and baking.

They sell them rock hard because once they ripen, the window to sell them is very small indeed. You're not meant to eat them that same day. You need to take them home and let them ripen.
Same thing with bananas. You want to eat the hard yellow/green bananas? No, you have to take them home and let them ripen.
Although it WOULD be nice if they would take a small group that has ripened and sell them, so you can eat that same day.
