We've just moved into our first house, and there are two extra bedrooms that will take us a while to grow into. Painting is our #1 option to transform these spaces into guest rooms on a budget.

The carpets are downright ugly -- the largest room has what I call "dusty plum" - a true, darker purple with pinkish/red tones (the walls are pastel pink and purple right now - a little girls' room).

The smaller room has a lime/peridot carpet - think gender neuteral baby's room (exactly what it was). The walls have a multi-colored baby border and are painted to match the carpet (poor baby has a bad start in the style world already!).

Any recommendations for colors to paint these rooms to tone down or blend these carpets? My first instinct for the purple room is to go with an antique bronze color, and the room is large enough to pull it off. I'm drawing a blank with the green room... any thoughts are appreciated!

a clay color would work but if you hate the carpet so much you can buy dye for your carpets just use a carpet shampoorer instead of water use the dye directions should be on the bottle.

Sounds like you like darker colors so can you find a paint in the same hue as the carpet but several shades darker? It make make the carpet "fade" into the walls. Also there are companies that dye carpet and a lime should be able to darken pretty easily. Or go with the flow and paint pastel yellow and furnish with a light touch like wicker for a 'sunny' look.

Have you checked to see if there are wood floors under the carpet. If there is not I agree with getting area rugs to hide the carpet. Large area rugs in a neutral color. There will probably be a boarder of the ugly carpet showing. Paint the walls a neutral and tie in the old carpet with fabrics and accessories. Even though they may be colors you would not choose, you can make it work.

I could live with the dark plum. I would use a neutral shade such as an off white or cream color. As far as the green rug is concerned, it sounds so ugly that I think I would try to dye it. If it doesn't work, tear it up and paint the floor until you can afford carpeting.

To hide the rugs go to an yard sale and buy large area rugs. You can get an 8' by 10' for around $15 to $25. Then plan your colors around them. Dark colors on the wall make a room look smaller, so use medium to light colors on the wall picking up the colors in the rugs.
Good luck.

I'm sorry I was reading your question and trying to picture the rooms in my mind when I started feeling sick to my stomach, After a brief moment while I ran to the bathroom and vomited I started to read again. When it got to the colors I felt my stomach start to churn again.
After all that I can't offer you any help. I would hope some women reply. They are better at this kind of thing then I am.
