I would recommend crating the puppy. Not just because it is a puppy and they tend to have accidents, but because it is a husky. Huskies are destructive. My husky ate everything from plants to the inside of my car. The 4 hour schedule is just fine. It is when you are gone all day were you should be concerned. I leave my house at 8 am and don't get back until 12:30 and my husky does just fine.

Huskies do however cry when being locked in a cage or left alone. It is something you have to get us to and not worry when trying to leave the house. The puppy will stop after awhile and be just fine.

Also please don't leave the husky outdoors when gone. Huskies are diggers and jumpers and will escape. If you do want to leave the puppy outdoors, then you must fence in your yard. It should be 6 ft high and about 1-2 ft in the ground. Yes, I mean in the ground.

Siberian Huskys are normally active-good sized dogs. It sounds like you have your hands full with school. Maybe you should put off getting a puppy until you are more settled and in your own place. Puppies need a lot of time, attention, and excercise. Would this be fair to the puppy to be in a cage all day? If you are a true animal lover-please think it over a little more before committing. There will be more oportunities in the future to get a great puppy. Good Luck!

You need to crate him. 4 hours isn't bad..Make sure you get a crate for him that is size he needs now, and you'll have to get it bigger as he grows. This way he will learn not to go in his crate. If you get one that's too big for him before he's ready, you'll have a mess. You also need to take him to obedience class, or puppy class. This is not so much for the dog, but to teach you how to correct him and how to train him. If you've never had a Husky before, you need to be aware of how they act. Huskies are born wanderers and runners. Get a book on Siberians. They are not the easiest dogs in the world for a first time owner. I have 7 total, and currently own 3. (I have also fostered for shelter groups). Good luck, and have fun! Most of all you need to be the ALPHA dog. He will respect you, and listen to you. Also, take him for long runs, or walks, to get the energy out of him. You'll both benefit!

I love huskies. They are so pretty. I have a black lab puppy. Well, if your school schedule is only for 4 hours M-F, that's fine. Puppy can be in a crate for about 4 hours maximum, but will need to be let out to go potty. You'll have to be sure to come home right away to let him out. It might also be a little tougher/longer to train him to potty outside, but you can do it. If you don't crate the puppy, you will have dog stuff everywhere, so crating is the best in this situation. Good luck.

Crating may be your only option, but that would be a good idea with any new puppy. My sister owns several, and they love to be outside. Sitka, her male, wants constant attention and has dug a tunnel under her shed to sleep in. He loves to jump into the streams back home, Alaska, catch and eat live Salmon. Make sure you read up on them, and are prepared for a working dog that loves nothing better than to pull those sleds and run free.

well when you first get him your gonna have to spend quite a bit of time with him first and as for crate training let me just say this

THE DOG WILL SCREAM! lol i tried crate training mine and i just couldn't take the piercing screams anymore, my husky pup just won't seem to get used to her crate so i no longer use it and she is fine
but if you don't want the pup to poop and pee everywhere and stink up your room like mine did then the crate will do for you
it will also keep him from chewing up ALL your stuff

Huskies are very hyper have ALOT of energy
they Dig randomly
are destructive of your slippers and clothes etc.
and a whole lot of other stuff
But
they are very adorable and are very loyal they're good dogs
they're friendly with everyone and are not guard dogs
if you do get your husky pup
You will Love him!
mine is a female 10 weeks old got her at 6 weeks old i set out to get a boy but ended up with my Shaddie
when you take your pup for walks those will be fun for you

Good Luck with getting your pup!
hope you find the one you like:):):):):):)

Warning Siberian Huskies are hyper active dogs. They need lots of running time. Crate him anytime you can't watch him. My sisters Siberian used to crawl under the bed and chew through their electrical cords while they were away.

You can crate the puppy while your out, but if you get a husky, you'll need to spend a lot of time with it when you get home and make sure that you take it out for plenty of exercise. They have a lot of energy and can be difficult to train. Oh, their also diggers, so be prepared to have your backyward dug up.

Think about this choice carefully since Huskies are still very much pack animals that thrive in their own kind in company - it's always recommended to get more than one, since one on it's own (or even with another kind) often pines to the point of health issues. Do you have a yard since the breed needs lots of space?

crating is the best thing to do...
even though my puppy did not like it at first, it is the safest thing to do for the dog. make sure you walk the dog for a long time` and tire him out before he has to go into the crate. also make the crate an enjoyable experience for him... i suggest a kong filled with peanut butter. good luck!
