Depends on your belief. I believe there is a God and that death is not the end. I also believe that this God created all life as we know it.
Of course, humans can create their own God or Gods. All you have to do is make up a story, create an image showing said God, and start worshipping it. Walah! Instant God.
As you can see, it can go both ways. Still, humans desire to know the unknown will continue their search for whatever God they can find.

When I watch documentaries - like on Discovery Channel - things about dinosaurs, and the ice age.. and even way way longer ago than that.... when the Earth was just water and swamps and there were no creatures smarter than a lizard... I wonder... "So, what was God doing 20 million years ago?" Was He just napping? Waiting? Dealing with a different planet?
I have trouble envisioning that there WAS a God.... I think a God was not "needed" until there were thinking , feeling creatures here.
So, I would vote: humans invented God.... maybe humans ARE God ! Maybe it is our spirits. Maybe it is the cumulative group of all the spirits of all of use who have passed over.
... but let's include animals too... their spirits are blended-in their also. They have spirits too. Let's remember Native Americans, and others, who believe so strongly, in animal Spirits.

Humans created God. It is illogical and full of contradictions to believe in any god, for no proof exists. Yet, in is very percievable to see why humans would create a god, in order for control, and of course as a means for life.

The *real* God created humans|
However, people create God in their own image - creating a god who reflects their own vices, for cruelty generally, calling it righteousness, and then imposing that on their victims|
Nothing more than that brings discredit to true religion|
Those people are found in all religions - Christianity, Islam, and Judaism|

Gods are super-human characters invented by the human imagination. At one time they were used to try to explain natural phenomena, but now science has replaced religion as a route to truth, they are mostly believed in to satisfy emotional needs, such as the wish to believe that death is not the end of us.

Primitive humans needed explanations and so invented beings that share human traits, this hasn't changed much over the thousands of years.
