Sadly there are people out there who claim that they love horses, yet still send them to slaughter. I am not one of them. I am responsible for breeding 5-10 horses a year, I follow every horse I breed and when the time comes, I try to re-aquire them and bring them back to my farm to make sure they find good homes. I also donate quite a lot to a horse retirement foundation to make sure there are places that can look after not only mine, but other horses once their career is over. I have a small scale stud farm, but if every stallion owner donated 1% of the stud fees brought in each year to a retirement foundation, millions of dollars would be used to help horses live the rest of their lives with dignity if they aren't able to be hunters/jumpers etc.. Coolmore, Hill N Dale etc.. make millions on mass producing horses, it's up to them to be responsible for what happens to them once their career is done. I do my part and will give at least 1% on top of what I already do, its time they do the same.

i wish i could understand your question. are you talking about people who eat horse? or people who raise them. the only time you slaughter a horse is when they have been injured, most likely a broken leg, and need to be put to sleep because they can't recover from such an injury. i was at a race around three years ago and witnessed a horse have a bad accident. his front legs just buckled making him fall face first in the ground and launched the jockey a good 20 yards forward. they didn't waste anytime because they knew the poor horse was done. luckily, they brought a huge screen and shielded all the spectators from viewing whatever it was they did to the poor horse, loaded it onto a flatbed and took it away

There was an article this week in USA Today titled "Kentucky Swamped With Unwanted Horses" (read it http://news.aol.com/topnews/articles/_a/kentucky-swamped-with-unwanted-horses/20070314173109990001?ncid=NWS00010000000001 ). Nobody who has questioned the anti-slaughter legislation believes in slaughter or is 'pro' slaughter. The American Association of Equine Practitioners really presents the issue better than I could here (you can read their position http://www.aaep.org/pdfs/AAEP_Position_HR857.pdf ). If the thousands of horses that are killed in slaughterhouses every year are not removed from the horse population what will become of them? Certainly there has to be some market correction in regards to the number of horses bred every year but to unilaterally outlaw slaguhter without increasing funds to rescue groups or providing low-cost euthanasia and carcas removal to those that need it you end up with situations detailed in the article above, including horses being released to roam as they please or slowly dying in a paddock where nobody sees.

I love horses and have owned and owrked with them most of my life.
Horse slaughter is gross and I am very glad we here in the US do not eat horse meat.
They slaughter many horses each year and most of the meat is shipped off to Europe for human consumption and sold to zoos for animal feed.
I hate that they do it but if they did not there are a large number of horses each year that would not have anyplace to go. People breed to many babies and no one wants them.
It does not mean they should slaughter them but if they stopped doing it there would be a huge surplus of horses and no one to take them or care for them so I think many would end up neglected. Not sure what the answer is. Whis I knew.
I hate to see them slaughter one of the most noble creatures on the planet.

um... none of us who have and love horses would ever send them to slaughter. we're the ones trying to get legislation passed to outlaw slaughter in this country. We don't be leave (or believe for that matter) in horse slaughter... we don't believe there's any good reason for horse slaughter.
