In the United States, it is standard practice
to issue that oath to everyone at some point
in their med school career.

I suppose one might avoid it by switching
schools in the middle.

Why would you want to avoid it?

Yes, I believe everyone should take it
FOR THEMSELVES. It dis-ambiguates
a lot of problems in medicine.

In the 1970s, cultural and social forces induced many American medical schools to abandon the Hippocratic Oath as part of graduation ceremonies, usually substituting a version modified to something considered more politically up to date, or an alternate pledge like the Oath or Prayer of Maimonides.
The Hippocratic Oath has been updated by the Declaration of Geneva. In the United Kingdom, the General Medical Council provides clear modern guidance in the form of its 'Duties of a Doctor' and 'Good Medical Practice' statements.

The Hippocratic Oath is a tradition, not a law. (Some people really do not know what they are talking about!)

In my medical school, it was part of our graduation ceremony.

It is a rite of passage, a tradition, nothing more.

The Oath is a reminder that we, as physicians, are held to a higher standard in terms of our practice, ethics and morals. It is a good thing to adhere to in all walks of life.

We could all benefit by adopting the basic tenets of the Oath, which are to not harm others, to have high morals, to do what is best for others, and to keep others' business confidential.

Every doctor is required by law to take that oath. It's an oath about helping patients to the best of your abilities no matter what. Do you want a doctor NOT to take it? There are enough quacks out there already...:)
