If we give our 2 golden retrievers big bowls full of food and refill it throughout the whole day they will eat it all at once, so we only feed them a set amount in morning and night, however our neighbours dog which is a Boxer can have a big bowl full and he will eat it throughout the whole day.

So why do dogs such as labs and golden retrievers eat it all at once like little piggies, but other dogs such as boxers and littler dogs ration it throughout the whole day? =) thanks!

It all has to do with the way the dog is raised ..i have allways kept the bowl full of food and both my dogs have allways just went to the bowl to eat when they are hungry..My sister on the other hand who has the brother of my female she only feeds her dog twice a day since he was a pup so when she puts food in the dish he eats like a pig..and he allways begs for food and eats anything left on the counter..so it like i said it all has to do with the way the dog is raised..if you want to get your dogs to get used to having a full bowl then just keep it full after a few days of eating they will slow down and realize they don't have to eat it all at once...and both my dogs are labs..

With 2 dogs, the one thinks the other will eat it's food. feed them in 2 separate rooms and when they are done eating, put a small amount back in without them knowing. once they see the food is always there they will only eat till full knowing there will be more for later. Don't let them share the same bowl or room when eating.

Before I got into Shih Tzu's I had Shepard's. They always had food out at all times. My theory on this. And I have told many people about this, once they try it they found it works.

Set the food out they will gobble it up for a few days. Because they think that is all they are going to get. But once they figure out that food is there all the time they will ease up and not gobble. Once a dog knows there if food out at all time they will space them self out. But don't let them see a crumb in the bowl they will think it is the end of the bag and really chow down. This has really work for many of people i told to do this with.. Not saying it may work for you but I would at least try it. It may take a while for them to figure out that there is food left out for them., but once they know they should be ok. I use to have a box of bones set on the floor with the lid open.. They only took one when I told them it was ok .

The reason why your dogs eat theirs all at once is because you have 2 dogs and the neighbors have only 1. When you have 2 dogs in the same house they will eat all their food because they are worried that the other dog is going to eat their food too.
I have 2 Goldens here too and they do the same thing

Adult dogs should be fed once per day. I have heard that Vets recommend you leave the food for 5 minutes after they stop eating. Any more is too much. Dogs, like most animals are naturally greedy and will eat what they see.

It has nothing to do with the breed of dog, but the dog itself.

I have 2 border collie crosses and a jack russell. The jack russell and one of the border collie inhale their food as soon as we let them. The other border collie barely touches hers and usually ends up eating her breakfast at dinner time.

With my 2 dogs that inhale their food, if we continuously gave them food, they would just keep eating until they got sick. They always act as though we never feed them. That's why we have to ration them.

my boxer is also smart enough to leave the food for it to last for the entie day... but most breeds have BIG appetites and will stuff themselves with everything served.

golden retrievers and labs are very active dogs and require more food than some other breeds, to fuel their energy.
