Infection from giardia can occur from consuming contaminated food or water; this includes clean-looking mountain streams. It can also be transferred from animal or human feces. Not every person displays symptoms of infection, but they can still serve as a carrier of the disease. Giardia infection is a concern for people camping in the wilderness or swimming in contaminated streams or lakes, especially the artificial lakes formed by beaver dams (hence the popular name for giardiasis, "Beaver Fever").

It is my understanding that you can indeed be reinfected as the source is not always the same. Nothing that I have studied or read indicates otherwise.

I am not a doctor but maybe your M.D. gave you misinformation or what I have read is incomplete.
Best of health to you.

Yes, giardia is a parasite, and if treatment is not aggressive with medications, it can lay dormant in the intestines until it decides to aggrivate again. There are many organisms that can do this. Doctors usually will treat, then test, then treat, then test one more time. If all tests come back negative after treatment courses, then it should really be gone and not come back until you get reinfected, and since it is a parasite and not a bacteria, you can usually contract it again.

Giardia is a bug that comes from animal feces. When an animal like a beaver defecates in the water, which is often, and you drink the untreated water, plan on getting sick.
Once inside us it is hard to get rid of them. Long term treatment is needed.

Giardia is a parasite and re-infestation can occur. One attack does not give immunity.
Be careful about the water you drink.
