I used to suffer from them every night. I tried the bananas and no luck. You have to be very careful using potassium, it can screw up your heart, and that's from a doctor. I started taking magnesium and they have gone away. Hope this helps.

Proper hydration. Muscle cramps are quite often an indicator of poor water intake and electrolyte imbalances.
I would recommend he drinks one Gatorade about an hour or two before going to bed, and drink plenty of water during the day. Within a couple of days, the cramps should calm down or disappear completely.
If they don't, he should see a doctor. There are a few conditions, not too serious, that can affect the legs at rest. A doctor would be able to help him control the pain, and probably find a way to eliminate the cramps.
Hope this helps

Well, you got the right idea...potassiam deficiency can be one problem, however if it "is" potassiam deficiency, one banana is not going to do the trick. He should first see his doctor for a blood work up to determine if his potassian level is low and then the physician would guide him from there what to take as a suppliment. In some cases, we are now seeing what is called "Restless Leg Syndrome" which can manifest itself also in leg cramping. In any case, your friend needs to see his physician. He/She can diagnose the problem and give him medication or a suppliment to help the problem.

Low Sodium is also a cause of leg cramps. Try Powerade or Gatorade before bed.

Drink lots of fluids. My boyfriend gets leg and foot cramps a lot when he's getting a little dehydrated.

without medications...drink some tonic water every night. The quinine in it will get rid of the cramps. Mix with gin if over 21y/o for a better sleep too! :)

Take a hot shower right before bed. My step-father has the same problem and he is able to sleep after the shower.

You might try a niacin supplement or eat a banana before going to bed.
