You would have to......
For each dog you test, record the age, gender, and results for the following tests of paw preference. Have the dog sit for you.
Extend a hand and give the command "shake" or "shake a paw."
Record which paw the dog places on your hand.
Take a short break, allowing the dog to get up and move around.
Have the dog sit for you again and repeat the test. Do at least three tests with your right hand and at least three tests with your left hand.
Does the dog always respond with the same paw? Does it matter which hand you offer to the dog?
Place a treat (or toy) inside a tube large enough for the dog's paw, but too small for its mouth.
Show the dog the treat, then place the tube down in front of the dog.
Observe the dog's behavior. If he tries to extract the treat from the tube, which paw does it use?
As an alternative to placing a treat in a tube, you can put it underneath a piece of furniture, where it can only be retrieved by the dog with his hand.

Well...I tested my dogs. Here's what I got:

Name: Koli
Age: 13
Gender: Female
Breed: Border Collie

When asked to shake no matter which hand I put out she always used her right paw. The treat in the tube thing didn't go well. She ignored it.
______________

Name: Zena
Age: 6
Gender: Female
Breed: German Sheperd

When asked to shake she switched it up a bit. When using my right hand she used her left. When using my Left she used her right. With the tube she tried to chew through it. When that didn't work she picked it up and shook it out.
______________

Name: Vann
Age: 4 1/2 mos
Gender: Male
Breed: Lab

He didn't fully understand the shake concept. He always used hes left paw when he did understand. With the tube he tried to get it out by using both paws and when that didn't work he tried to chew though it. he ended up getting it out on accident by sticking his left arm though it.

Breed: Great Pyrenees

I think my dog is crazy. The first time I did it regardless of what hand I used he used his right paw to shake. The next two times I did it whatever hand I put out he put out the one in front of it. For instance if I put out my right he used his left. For the treat thing he looked at me like I was stupid and went to another room...sorry!

Wasn't able to do the tube test dont have one, & I'm kinda busy this week end,
But I also wondered which if there was a paw preference & there is
My min. schnuazer Zachary is 9 yrs. old got taught how to give paw a few yrs. ago
he prefers to give the right everytime & on my own I have tried to get him to use left but he doesn't like it.
My dobermans used to use both when asked for paw, guess it depends on your doggy.
Hope this help ya out.
