I feel like bike dealers are like used car lots and really trying to rip me off. If I buy online I won't be able to test ride it before I buy. Is there a better way to buy a new mountain bike that I don't know of?

If you feel that way about the shop you visited, you're at the wrong shop.

I can go into GREAT detail about what makes what bike better and why this brand has constant issues but, this is not the place.

Buy the 2007 Trek Fuel EX5 for cash at $950 and you've got yourself a killer bike with the best customer service in the industry, lifetime frame warranty, 5 year warranty on Bontrager parts, and 2 years on the Fork and Drivetrain.

Internet/Ebay = NO WARRANTY... MANY Companies have issued vivid disclaimers about internet sales and their restrictions there-of. Felt, Trek, Specialized, etc. have instituted this to uphold their brand's integrity. If you let your products get sold on the internet/Ebay, it devalues the product and brandname!

Trek/VW is the most winningest team in North America - the Fuel EX is proven!

AND!!! If you had a Bad Experience at a Trek Dealer then call them up because, they want to know about it! 1.920.478.4678

Bottom Line - Test ride the bike and a good dealer will even dial in the suspension for you BEFORE you test ride it!

13,300 sq ft - almost 600 bikes in stock... Honesty sells them!

Get a job at the local bike shop. Seriously! My boyfriend works at the local bike shop a couple hours a week and is entitled to Employee Pricing, which is often lower than cost! He also trades work for parts. In addition to the cost-effective perks he's building a relationship with local riders and bike mechanics and we've got a great group of riding buddies!

You can always go to the bi e shop, get fitted on the perfect bike and then "think about it", which means you don't buy in the shop, you find the exact bike online for cheaper and buy it that way. I recommend if you DO use EBay that you research your seller and try to buy from a reputable bike shop that has an online store (many do nowadays!).

Whatever you chose to do, good luck with it and I hope you find a bike you love!!!

While you migh find good deals on ebay, there is a risk involved. You don't know how hard a bike has been ridden, and in which state of maintenance it's been.

While some stories might be true, I've seen a lot of 'This bike has only been riden once or twice and left at the garage...', 'I loved this bike but decided I wanted to do heavier / easier stuff and so this bike isn't used'...

About where to find it, as you said, you only have a bike shop or going through the internet. The other chance is if you met someone at the trails that is selling his bike or something.

Good luck!

buying from a bike shop is the best way to go. they have the "real deal" there and can provide professional advise like component quality, frame sizing, and how to use certain new technology. online, you get very little help and you cant compare to talking to someone face to face.

if bikes are not your field of expertise, then it would be a good idea to go to a bike shop. yes, you pay a few dollars more, but you get a warranty with that. almost all shops will give free tune ups within a certain amount of time (usually after you have ridden the bike for 5 hours).

you also get the choice of trying out many bikes. if you dont like one, you can look down the row and see if any other ones catch your eye. in the shop i work at, we keep over 150 bikes from Trek and Jamis in stock all the time.

good luck

Well now is the time while the new models are coming in the last years bikes are on sale. Test ride the bike at the deal and then buy the same bike online-duh. Check out mTB action for adds. Check big sites like pricepoint and beyond bikes. Don't forget ebay. Buying local supports your shops and shipping kills anyway. Thats what i think.

I would definitely use ebay. I have sold many bikes on ebay, and all of them were worth almost twice what I sold them for. Make sure you consult with someone who knows about bikes (size, parts quality, frame quality, etc) before buying one, because most ebay sellers do not take returns and you'll be stuck with a bike that may not be the right or best one. A good idea might be to post a link to any bikes you are interested in on yahoo! answers, and I'll certainly tell you if you've found a good deal or not. Good luck and happy riding!

I definitely would not buy off Ebay! You NEED to test ride first! You aren't gona get really good dual suspension bike for cheap. I have a Cannondale Gemini and it cost $4500. Worth every penny! I own a Cannondale Scalpel, Gemini, Jekly and just sold a Aero 1000 road bike. Well over $20,000 in bikes in my garage. If you want the best, that's what it cost!

seriously, use ebay. you can get brand-new stuff there for a much lower price. the reason why is that the stuff is being resold, so it will only sell for its value, not the price that companies sell it for to make alot of money.

hope it helps!
