are you sure you meant programs??
did you mean processes??
in general there a number of processes running all the time in the background( unix/linux people call them daemons).. these are required for proper working of you computer..
Running too many programs is not a sign of virus...
A virus does every possible thing to hide itself... It won't ever do to expose itself..
my PC is clean from viruses.. and i still have over 40 process
running in background...
most of the process running are started during startup of your computer and can be stopped from being started...
ya.. there are chances that your computer may be feeding a lots of spyware.. try some online spyware removal tools.....

Although it is 100% possible you could have a virus. I would first go into Checking the programs themselves. Some programs will self-load during startup.
Not knowing which programs are running. The only thing I can tell you is to go into the programs properties, and unclick the load at startup function or words to that function. Also, Click on Start.. All programs.. Startup. And delete all programs you do not want to load at startup. Do not worry.. It will not delete the programs from your computer.. It just keeps them from starting up during a windows startup.
Hope all this helps.

Try using a spyware remover. Both of these are free.
Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free.

Go to run in programs and type in msconfig and then go to start programs. The ones that are checked open upon starting up your computer. If you don't want them opening up at startup just "uncheck them." It will make startup a lot easier and you can open them up when you need them.

the problem is that when you installed so many programs you never paid attention to the instructions during installation because i guarantee you majority of those programs have the option to start up with windows every time you tun it on and you never unchecked those options that's why millions of programs open up every time you log in and the computer would take over 20 minutes till it fully logs in and i learned that the hard way by formatting my computer and deleting everything but i also learned how to install it properly to prevent future problems all from the website below!!!

classic started to tell u the right answer
but he didnt finish
what u should do is go to
start.....run..type in....msconfig..press ok
now in new window
u select the start up tab....it will open up and u will see programs in there..with checkmarks....(these are all the programs that start when u turn on pc)
select disable all......press apply..press ok..exit with out restart
now go to start...all programs..accessories..system tools..disc clean up....after it has analyzed...check all the boxes..press ok
it will disappear when it is finished
now lets do this
first off lets go to start..control panel...add/remove programs...go in here and remove anything u do not need or use....next..go to start..double click my computer..double click c drive..go into program files....remove any folders that u just removed from add/remove programs......now go to start..run..type in..prefetch....press ok..in the new window that pops up..go to edit in top left..select all..press delete...close window now....now go to start..run..type in temp..press ok..same thing..select all/delete...
now go here....download this program called regcleaner from worldstart.com...http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-downloa...
after u have it downloaded and installed on desktop...open it up..click i agree...u will then see a new window open...it will list all the software on your pc.....at the top of reg cleaner..select options..registery cleaner..method..automatic....... go to tools..registery cleaner..do them all...it will then start to scan..when it is finished..u will see the list of software again..close reg cleaner..u are finished with it...u just cleaned your registery........now go here..download this..it is called ccleaner.....http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.h...
now to use this..once it is installed to the desktop..open it up..click analyze...after it has finished analyzing..click run cleaner...repeat this process 3 times...next..on the left hand side of ccleaner u will see issues..click that..then click scan for issues
after it has finished scanning for issues..click fix issues...all issues..no back up..close...run this process untilthere are no issues..then close ccleaner...now i would do these 2 things here...download ewido (now called avg antispyware) it is free for 30 days full program...after 30 days it reverts to free ware..u will lose automatic updates and the realtime protection...but still..this is one of the best to scan and remove threats with...before uscan
try this..go to start..control panel..folder options..view...u will see a few items with checkmarks..check "show hidden files and folders"..press apply..press ok.....now update ewido..run full system scan....after scan..remove what it finds..then go back to control panel..folder options,view..reset to default..apply ok
now this is not gonna make the pc superfast like adding more ram would..but this will clean the pc all the way up ..get u all the free space ..and make sure no viruses are on it.....i hope this helps u a little..good luck
ewido....http://www.download.com/ewido-security-s...
what kinda security do u have?
here is my suggestions
antivirus...http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
firewall..http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
antispy...http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
antispy..http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html
these programs are all free and very effective
after u have installed and updated....open virus scanner and run full system scan
this whole process should take about 20 minutes...it will take awhile to scan....but all the other stuff i showed u will be easy and quick
instant mess me if u need help
