While walking for awhile, instead of just holding hands (which we were pretty much doing the entire time), he had his arm across my back and had his hand on my waist... So I put my arm around his waist :)
Is there some significant meaning to this?

Arms around waist, holding hands, either way it means you are both in love and care for each other and I for one think it's great. now along the way if he stopped and gave you a gentle kiss on the forehead, my gosh he would be perfect.

He wanted to be closer to you. Holding hands (likely with your fingers intertwined) helps you feel connected. However, with your arms around each other's waists, you can feel more of the person. Being together physically is an outward expression of feeling close together emotionally, mentally, spiritually, etc. (or at least it should be rather than an ends to itself).

Either he really wanted to touch you or he likes you. You should ask (if these methods continue to happen) If he likes you and wants to be more than just friends. Good luck!
