THe airline canceled my flight right now - there is a insane wait to talk to someone and we have found a new flight on another airline - would it be safe to book a new flight with a new airline and assume continental will give us a refund? They currently rebooked us on a sunday night flight.

I agree with the last person. Only deal with Continental. Long line? Pick up the phone and call customer service. There will be a wait there, too.. but it will be quicker. Besides, you can stand in line and be on hold with a cell phone.

Continental will put you on a different flight if they can, most likely on their airline. If they book you on another airline, it must be completed through their personell or you will most likely have to pay for it yourself.

Are you being canceled ahead of time, or are you stuck at the airport right now? If you are stuck until Sunday, then the airline is supposed to give you a voucher for a hotel room and meals. If you take the flight on the other airline, you may be taking your chances on a refund. I would wait to talk to the Continental representative. In cases like this, by taking the other flight on Continental, you can get them to give you a ticket for a flight some other time besides your trip now.

It has been some years since I've dealt with this kind of thing though.

If your cancellation is due to weather or other circumstances beyond the airline's control you won't get any compensation for the delay.

Whatever the reason, deal with Continental ONLY on this! They will get you rebooked on the next available flight. This may be on Continental or another airline. If you rebook on your own, Continental will be under no obligation to refund your ticket unless you are on a full-fare fully refundable ticket.

ASSUME NOTHING!

If it's due to the weather, then no refund. It says so on their website. You are allowed one change of date/time, but no refund.
