News cast after news cast shows a division of happy and appreciative Iraqi people, and Soldiers volunteering for their 3rd and 4th tours. I know many are involuntarily extended, but what about those that want to be there to help, and the people there that want the US to stay for fear of what will heppen if we pull out, and we all know what that is.

2nd by the way: I do know and am well aware of the differences in attitudes as to troop presence. There are A LOT of Iraqi people and extremist groups in the region that want us gone, I know this, but I also know there are many personnel in our Volunteer Military (this is not Vietnam) that want to go and do their jobs as well as aid local people in the region.

You get an AMEN from me too! I know many soldiers that want to go...my husband being one of them. He has deployed 3 times since 02 and will soon be headed over for another deployment, his second to Iraq. He is ready to go...not just ready, but wants to go do his job!! Thank you for asking the questions because I get SO tired of people speaking for the soldiers (and families) and making decisions for them based on what they want the soldiers and families to think. (i.e. "the soldiers want to come home" "the soldiers are sick of deployments"). My husband wont ever be tired of deploying, and I will never stop supporting him. His dream would be to go away for a year, come home for a year. He isnt a garrison soldier, so to poke around here and do stupid details is not for him. He perked up a little in the field exercise, a little more for NTC, and happy when he got his time frame for deployment.
So YAY you for stepping up to ask an unpopular question that so many of us agree with!

Frankly, it doesn't matter what the soldiers want. Their job is to carry out the policy set forth by the country. Should we leave Iraq because soldiers want us to? No. Should we stay because soldiers want us to? No. The only relevant issues are, a) is it possible to accomplish the mission, and b) if possible, are we actually accomplishing it? If either a) or b) are no, then we should pull out now or very soon. If both are yes, then we should stay.
Let us be clear, there are soldiers on both sides of the issue. Some do not believe we can win, others think we can. There are some Iraqis who support us, some who oppose us, and many "on the fence". Therefore, it isn't logical to use "Soldier X and Iraqi X support the war", since opponants can just as easily say "soldier Y and Iraqi Y oppose the war". They cancel each other out.
Having studied several official reports released by the DOD, along with having spoken to soldiers and marines who have served, along with reading commentators from both sides of the argument, my own opinion is that the surge and the new tactics by Gen Petreaus is that they are the right tactics, 2 years too late. Perhaps your read how kidnappings and bombings in Baghdad are dropping? Great! However, the "liberal" media isn't reporting that attacks are on the rise outside of Baghdad. This was predicted early on.
Furthermore, there have been at leaast two additional troop requests in the last 2 months. This is good in that it brings the number of troops closer to the levels recommended (but not accepted by the Bush administration) for the surge, but it also shows a disturbing "mission creep" such as what happened in Vietnam.
I suspect bad times are ahead of us, and we should pull out. But the Democratic congress doesn't have the votes, and Bush will not pull out. We have at least two more years of undecisive warfare ahead of us.

Well there are soldiers and iraqi people who feel oppositely. If you are in the military then you know this. You also know that media will never be able to completely show truth. Videoclips and pictures cannot explain context. It equally cannot show what people truly feel. It's not a simple do they want us there type issue. Obviously there are many Iraqis who want us there, but as a soldier, it is probably your duty to recognize those Iraqis who dont want us there, after all, it is those that facilitate and perpetuate the attacks on our servicemembers. So it goes both ways, and I'm sure if you search the internet for iraqi opinion, you'll find evidence of both. I've read articles where Iraqis greet the convoys coming into town, and flip them off when they're leaving. True opinion is hard to comeby from a position of power and authority, especially at gunpoint. Many Iraqis fear the insurgents, if they support our efforts, but many also fear the intentions of our troops. I think the most important thing we could do is legitimize some rebel groups. While some are barbaric jihadists with dreams of perpetuating a global jihad, many seriously just want the foreign presence out of their country. If we recognize that some parts of the insurgency are not out to destroy America or her allies, maybe we can isolate the extremists and the foreigners there fighting us. I actually could go on, but most people have their minds made up about the issue, maybe even you

Well, the Americans are a VERY selfish society. And just like in Vietname, we would rather save our troops lives then ALOT of Iraqis and stop ALOT of terror. Bush Is actually right.
After a certain period we will control Iraq.
But the real problem is the U.S isn't getting backup. And without Australia or China or France giving any REAL support, the Americans will think WE are fighting the war, not the Coalition. And that's a prob

AMEN!!
You are absolutely right. The Iraqi people in my AO are VERY happy we are here to help and WANT us to help. They are working with us everyday.
Well over half of my battalion is on their 2nd or 3rd deployment and volunteered to come on this one just to be in this unit in Iraq.
Of course, the media doesn't want to tell you this...
