It varies considerably from person to person, but the generally accepted answer is approximately 1 hour per unit.
So, if you drink 3 pints of beer, that's 6 units of alcohol, so approximately 6 hours to clear your body. Obviously, with larger quantities, it can take MUCH longer to leave your body.
I always go on the side of caution and consider it from the time I stop drinking, plus an extra 2-3 hours. So if I drink 3 pints and finish at 11pm, I'll say I should be clear by around 7am.
Drinking water does NOT sober you up quickly. Alcohol is a diuretic, which makes you pee, which dehydrates you. Drinking additional water before going to bed simply reduces the effects of dehydration, and hence reduces the risks and/or symptoms of a hangover.

There's a lot of factors: weight, fitness level, genetics, what type of alcohol you drank (dark or colored liquor takes longer than clear because of more impurities), what you ate before drinking, if you have eaten since drinking, how much you drank, how quickly you drank it, have you been sitting in one place drinking or have you been up dancing (metabolizing the alcohol out of your system), water intake, certain health conditions.
Conventional wisdom says 1 drink (1 beer, 1 shot, or 8 oz wine) = 1 hour.
but,
there are many factors that can increase or decrease the amount of time it takes your system to rid the body of alcohol.

As some of the answerers have said it takes about an hour for one unit of alcohol to be dissipated by your system. What they have not said is this means that you can drink half a pint of beer an hour forever and never get drunk.

It takes 1 hour for every unit of alcohol you drink for the liver to break it down and to get out of your system.
Dont drink coffee when there is alcohol in your sysstem as it makes you urinate more nad you can become dehydrated without realising it.
Drink water as it will sober you up quicker, and stop drinking at a sensible time if you are going out (especially to work) the next day.

i think 1 hour per unit consumed, though 1 unit can vary its not always 1 shot or half a pint of lager it depends on the strength of the alcohol xxx.

You have to flush your system by drinking lots of water. It will take about 4 hours to sober up but about 12 hours to be rid of the toxins. I suggest you drink 3 16oz. bottles of water.
