It's simply a case of democracy in action.
We the people have decided that our ultimate goal is to fly for the lowest price possible.
Given the choice between flying a legacy carrier and a low cost, low service competitor we the people opted for price.
The market responded and now you are sitting in the result.

It depends on the airline. And usually in economy, people always complaint about something, seat too hard, not enogh legroom, too narrow, too cramped, too small, no elbow room, etc.
Maybe you should try flying on a Singapore Airlines A340-500 or Thai A340-500, great option for Economy travellers.
Or you can spend just a little more and travel on Economy Plus...or bring your own pillow.

I wish I knew why they felt the need to make you as uncomfortable as possible. On my last flight from California to South Africa, I took two mugu pillows I bought at Brookstone. One was to sit on and one was to hold my head up while I slept (yeah right). Even if they needed to cram us all in and keep us sitting upright, why do they need to make the seats so hard? I wish I had and answer for you.

Just so you know, the first class seats are just as bad--except you have room to be uncomfortable.
I think that the Chiropractors Guild has paid off the airline manufacturers! We fly, get our backs screwed up, and the cracky-backs make money! :)

but the head rest suck and so do the people usually sitting next to you. lol!! if you fly often do frequent flyer miles and try to get a better seat. that little bit of money can really help how you sleep!! i usually bring two pillows if not plane pillows. on for my head and one for my but.. try it!

I think a dentist' chair is more comfortable. I always bring my neck pillow (boomerang), and I don't understand why the airline give people those flat and useless pillows.

Didn't you know, us middle class people are thorns in the side of the upper class snobs. If they had it their way we would sit in the baggage compartment.
