What is the 'bottom line' strategy for strength rather than bulk and definition? Strength is really what im shooting for. I have the idea that its all about resistance.. more weight more weight even if you do less reps and alternating between fast and slow.

strength and size are not directly proportional. the diet is what determines the size of the muscle not the load used to stimulate it.

femails have a lack of testosterone which means that we will not bulk up as much as men. in saying that it doesnt mean that we cant lift more. we can still get strengh and a somewhat muscular physique (nicely toned and shapely muscles) but we will never bulk up as such with out the use of extra testerone. also you cant see muscles if i have a layer of fat covering then. so a chubby looking person could go to the gym and lift more then the bodybuilder looking guy cos he may be stronger but u just cant see the muscle definition under the fat. so just keep training and u will be able to lift those extra 10 pounds and not look like he-man cos its not in our genes, never be scared of weights!!

to build strength quicker u can do a reverse set of reps. instrad on doing a medium weight for 3 sets of 15 rep. do a hard weight that u struggle to do 5-6 rep and do that 10 times (with rest period inbetween of course.)

Here are a few possible explanations:

1) He may have a lot of body fat.
2) Could have been his warm-up set.
3) Could have hurt himself and is taking it easy.
4) Is doing more reps/set.
5) Better diet.
6) Muscles do not have as good a neurological link. (motor skills)
7) Bigger bones.

Bodybuilders are not as strong as weightlifter. Bodybuilders only focus on the aesthetics of the muscles (muscle symmetry, size, and tone). Bodybuilders also use creatine.

Weightlifters care only about strength, and you will see, if you compare a weightlifter to a bodybuilder, they won't look as big but will be much stronger.

No. Even a body builder will admit that functional strength is much different than bulk and definition.

The two goals even require different workout strategy.

Nope, You can be thin with relatively well defined muscles and still be weaker than a larger person whose muscles are hidden under more fat.
