It's a question I've wanted to ask for ages because I want to work out how much the government receives on average if every smoker bought one packet of 10 fags per week. And why the government doesn't just put the money towards building shelters for the smoking community instead of spending it on other things.

According to ASH, tobacco taxation raises revenue of £9.5bn compared with the £1.7bn needed to treat smoking-related illness.

There are two main reasons why UK taxes on tobacco are relatively high: a price incentive to persuade people to give up, and to raise taxes from a source which has relatively little effect on the economy.

Its just one of the goverments ways of making money. Unfortuanately they don't realise that it'd be better to spend the money they have more effeciently than to keep grabbing more of us. Can't believe the price of cigarettes now, I had to give up as £250 a month was too much for me! (30 B&H a day - 16 weeks as a non smoker now!).

I have no idea how many smokers are in the UK except I smoke & pay a hefty price for them.If the government wanted us all to stop smoking they would ban the production of all tobacco products then we would have no choice. They will not do this has they recieve way too much in tax revenue we are not the drain on the NHS has we pay for any treatment we may require.Say if they stopped taxing us I could pay into a private scheme & recieve next day treatment.

The latest figures i can find are:
In England in 2004, smoking prevalence for adults was 25 per cent (26 per cent of men and 23 per cent of women). There was a decrease in smoking prevalence from 39 per cent in 1980 to 26 per cent in 1994, rising to 28 per cent in 1998. Prevalence has been steadily falling since then.

I kno this isnt the whole uk but you could use it as a rough guide.
