Consider your climate. Because of the many folds of skin these sweet dogs can be prone to skin rashes in high humidity and heat.

Wow even a shar pei rescue center in my part of the world.

I advise you go and visit breeders before getting your puppy. They are usually pleased to discuss the pros and cons of the animal and your life style. That is what we do with our poodles. This way you get to see where the puppies are coming from and observe the parents.

You are smart to investigate ahead of time. Every breed that has specialties also has it's own grooming and health issues.

"While devoted to their family, these dogs can show aggression toward strangers and other dogs. They need firm training and are better suited to experienced owners. The harsh coat needs weekly brushing, but shedding isn't a big problem.Daily walks are adequate, but a good run every so often will be appreciated.Shar-peis are prone to skin and eye problems, as well as hip dysplasia. They're fine as trainability and kids pet go, and very good for city living."-Dogs The Ultimate Care Guide.
Note: This is only one book's idea, I suggest getting some books on dogs, & Shar-peis in paticular from your local library. All dogs are different ,but this is the main summary of a shar-peis attudute. Good luck finding the perfect puppy! :)

Contact the Shar Pei breed Club for informed information on this breed - it is not the breed for everyone & you need to be very sure that you are buying from a reputable breeder:

Make sure to get a puppy from a reputable breeder and find out the health history of the parents. These dogs have a tendancy to have eye and skin problems. You will also need to make sure to feed them good quality food and be very observant of them. From what I have seen, they are very friendly, loving dogs.

YES,On a daily basis, you have to clean under their wrinkled skin. At first I bought puppy wipes but baby wipes from the Dollar Store are just as good and ALOT cheaper.

You need to make sure clean in between its wrinkles very carefully and every day because they can get infections if you dont. Any reputable breeder will be able to tell you everything you need to know about caring for your new puppy.

They love their owners, but can be very subborn and hard to train.
If you get ine make sure you socialise it very well with people and dogs, take it to puppy parties and training classes. They can become very agressive if not.
