The puppy should be loyal, easy-to-train, needs weekly grooming, dailing walking, and likes swimming. Also should be able to stick to a schedule.

I've heard a lot of people mentioning labs, which are great dogs. I'm not sure where you live or what size dog you're looking for, but I would also HIGHLY recommend poodles.

They are very intelligent, easy to train, need grooming, were originally water retrievers, and are very loving, loyal dogs. They also come in three sizes and a multitude of colors, so you can pretty much find a dog to meet your needs. And despite people's perception that they are "wimpy" dogs, they are wonderful athletes and love long walks. And our toy poodle reminds ME of the daily schedule :)

Good luck finding a puppy! :) Also, please don't get it from a pet store, as they are so often from puppy mills. I would buy "Puppies for Dummies" to get started and also "Choosing A Dog For Dummies," which goes through all of the breeds and their traits. There is also a test on the discovery website where they will match a breed to your needs! animal.discovery.com/breedselector/dogselectorindex.do
Hope this helps!

A border collie might be a good dog for you. I've always had border collies and they are highly intelligent and easy to train (you would have seen them in those agility competitions and stuff, they're the ones that always win!) they have a long coat so need grooming, are extremely loyal. They love swimming and because they are bred for working, need a walk daily. They definitely stick to a schedule, mine comes and sits at my side every day around 4:30 because thats our usual walk time. If i'm late, she just stares and stares until she sees me get my shoes!
They are great around children and are generally affectionate and loving. They can however, suffer from separation anxiety as they love company from humans more than anything else.
I love my border collie and i think i speak for a lot of dog owners when i say i wouldn't recommend anything else.

a stuffed animal or a toy robot dog. Truthfully, you need lots and lots of patience to have any kind of puppy. They are living creatures. I think you need to do a lot of research on how you train puppies and different kinds of dogs so you can look into yourself and see if you're the right kind of person to have one. With training, it's %95 the person, %5 the dog.

In answer to you question, I will relate a little story of my own:

I recently lost my best friend to the complications of plain old age. He was all you describe.

He was a lab/Shepherd mix with his looks on the lab side: all black but with longer legs and not so broad a chest.

He was funny and loving and loved to chase his ball and any squirrels in the vicinity. Once he actually caught one but didn't know what to do next so he let him go. We lived next to the Rideau River and he would often go in to splash among the ducks or just to cool off after a good run. He was an active dog outside but would immediately settle down in the house.

He was good with people and other animals and would only growl out of annoyance as he got older and some puppy we might meet in the doggy park would get in his space trying to play.

"Diablo" preferred the company of humans over dogs, although he was highly socialized and never fought with them.

All dogs need a routine in their life. We used to walk Diablo before work and after in the winter and more on weekends and in warmer times of the year. He was well leashed trained, although we had to use a "haltie" at first to get him used to not pulling.

He lived a full very happy 14 years and it was only in the last year that he developed arthritis in his back legs and despite many trips to the vet there was little we could do except keep him comfortable.

He was easy to house train and if he ever had an accident it was our fault for not being home on time.

Diablo died an easy death at home. One day he stopped eating and the next he laid down on the back deck and died. He is buried in the back garden wrapped in a shroud and placed in a wooden box.

I would highly recommend a lab mix or a pure lab for the qualities you are looking for. Still, for the record, I have never met a dog that didn't make someone, somewhere happy - no matter what breed.

Good luck!

Jackie

i think you are wanting a tomagochi? animals like humans are unpredictable and you will have to train any dog. we have a gorgeous mix from the pound - animal refuges are the only way - and she is the best. she was already 1 yr old - so training was a breeze and so loyal and greatful - i just dont understand how people buy animals - it would be like buying a child for me.

Get a lab. Lots of people think they are boring, but they really are the best. No frills, but it definitely has everything that's important in a dog if you ask me. A lab would meet all your criteria, except are you saying that you want a dog that would need weekly grooming? Labs have short hair and maybe don't NEED to be brushed weekly, but they love it all the same. Or maybe get a mixed breed that has a decent amount of lab in it.

I think a Golden Retriever is your dog! Very loyal, always will to please it's owner, very smart and trains well, loves the water. Loves to be brushed and loves to go and walk and meet new people.

when i read the words "easy-to-train" working dogs come to mind. Namely Border Collies, Blue Heelers etc and maybe even labs.

however, bear in mind that working dogs often need alot of stimulation, for example labs need to be walked twice a day.

there are lots of select-a-pet websites out on the web, one i used to pick my puppy is:

http://www.petnet.com.au/selectapet/dogselectapet.html

once you finally do decide on a breed, for heavens sake research it - and i dont just mean by reading. Talk to breeders, go to dog shows, and visit forums specific for your breed - they are often the best source of information.

Good luck and remember a pet is for life (the pets life), so make a wise choice!
