Yes, when you install software it will tell you the minimum system requirements it needs to run.

Depends if its software that is old. If it was designed for "95/98" it uses MS-DOS to run on, and XP/Vista doesn't use DOS. So you'd have to download a DOS Emulator.

But just because it doesn't say Designed for XP it doesn't mean that it won't work. It just not might work correctly or to the best of its abillity.
