I have an audition for a performing arts course in a couple of weeks, and i have to perform a monologue, i realise that this is an acting piece, but could i sing as i enter the stage and as i leave if it seems like that would be something the character would do, the reason i ask is that i major in singing and i feel like the character im playing would sing as a reasurance mechanism. Ive asked this question before and ive got a very mixed response on wether it would be ok to do so.

P.S please take into accout that the character i play is a depressed individual who feels very alone in the world. I wont be singing to show that part of my tallent off i will just be doing it casually as to fit the characters persona.

Thanx xx

Often people who are depressed feel no desire to sing at all. Rather, they might 'go into themselves'. Look at what your character is saying and try to figure out if they would really sing in their situation.
Good luck with the audition! :-)

it is not in many cases required which you recite a monologue from the play for which you're auditioning, so do no longer subject approximately that. As for a "making a track monologue", in the event that they want a monologue, you need to provide it to them! some familiar passages are taken from Midsummer's and Our city.

I understand your thought process. If you sing, you will stand out and the auditioners will know you're creative. However, if a) the performing arts course is all acting, no singing or b) you will sing a separate song for your audition, it might be confusing and weird.

If you do decide to sing, work hard on it (with your voice teacher/coach if you have one) even though you want it to sound casual. You want it to look normal, reassuring, casual, but trust me, you don't want to sound like it. Act while you sing (well) to make it what you want. Don't lower the quality of your voice, just highten the quality of your acting instead.

Whichever you decide, break a leg!!

It is important to stand out in auditions. Just be really prepared, no winging it. It will flop. Being sure of what you will do is the key. If it doesn't work, you learned a lesson. Great performers take risks.

If it's an audition in the uk DON'T sing if it's a monologe as they really get annoyed if they think your singing for no other reason other than to show off. My old Drama teachers would get really annoyed if there is no need for it don't do it.

If you think it is appropriate for the character at that point in their mental situation then absolutely do it! It sounds a really interesting interpretation, as long as it's justified. Good luck with your audition!

Listen to anything by Rex Harrison (sp) for inspiration. His Henry Higgins was wonderful, his Doctor Doolittle was fabulous. Can't sing well - but his timing was impeccable.

I think you could sing, I think it would be good. They have that on the movies don;t they? Everything is all f&^&ed up, and then they start singing so why the hell not. Good luck

Hi there.
No reason not to sing if it is in character, go for it!
Good luck, Steve.
