What you're looking at is called Fiber Cement Siding. GAF still makes a version of this WITHOUT the asbestos fibers, specifically for people like you who want to keep the original look. It may not be an exact match, so do a web search for "old Fiber Cement siding" for more options.

As other's have correctly stated, you can't get siding impregnated with asbestos anymore, but that doesn't mean you can't find siding to match. A few years ago I had a customer who needed this and I was able to get nearly perfect matching material through the local Home Depot, ordering through the Contractor's/Customer Service Desk. They even had some in stock.

Odds are you can find what you need, but you'll have to really search. Try GAF's site: http://www.gaf.com/General/GafMain.asp?Silo=RES1&WS=GAF first.

Good Luck!

Up until a few years ago, my local lumberyard sold asbestos siding. I don't know if you can still buy it, but if you need to find some I would suggest that you look for a house with some of it on and ask the owners if they have any extra lying about. You never know, you may run into someone who thinks that even wondering about asbestos will kill them. So many people are under the impression that just looking at an asbestos product is going turn them into candidates for a respirator.

As for removing it from your house (if you want to) remember that it is the dust that kills, not the solid form. The danger is in cutting it, or disturbing it and creating dust that you or someone else might breathe. That's why often in heating pipe applications, the asbestos is covered and left in place. Don't cut it with a power saw of any type. Avoid drilling it and whatever you so, don't smoke anything when you're creating dust.

Asbestos has been banned by the government for quite a few years. Actually, you should have the current asbestos siding professionally removed by people that are trained to do this using the proper control and sealing off the area when removing it and then just replace it all with the new vinyl siding.

Asbestos is well known as a cause of serious illness resulting in death. All it takes is one very small air borne fibre inhaled and lodged into your lungs ... and it will kill you slowly and painfully. Disturbing encapsulated asbestos cement siding is a dangerous occupation

Unfortunately, you should engage an expert demolition contractor to remove all of the existing asbestos siding on the house and then you can replace it with anything you like. Man, dig that money you have been hoarding in tin cans all over the yard and go on a holiday to California while they do it.

The alternative that costs least is to leave it alone.. don't drill it.. don't rub it back, don't put nails in it and definitely do not smash any more of it.

Do paint it with lots and lots of acrylic paint... but don't rub it back to prepare it... use a binder undercoat instead... and wear a good face mask while you are doing it... send all your grandchildren away while this is done.... it is just like spraying DDT.

Those days are gone. Not only that, but wait until you try to remove it. Now you have to call in an asbestos removing crew to do it and they wrap the house in plastic. You might want to check, but it may have to come off before you can sell the house or at least you will have to put a disclaimer in the sales statement.

Just so you know, asbestos is toxic and dangerous, i honestly don't think you will find any of that anywhere, or then it would be illegal. Put something else instead!!! One good advice would be to take away all the asbestos of your house, immediately.

You will have to go with a modern day equivalent. It will not match. I am afraid in order to make it match after the repair. Have vinyl siding put on over the old and new to make it blend in together.

i think it is now internationally banned. And that it causes alot of lung and respiratory diseases so even if it not banned in your place, you shoul not use it. you can just buy a composite siding board made of cement and fiber which is available in the market.
