while it is within the rules, it will have to be a long time ago and you will have to show proof of no drinking to actually get hired and even then many of the departments wount hire

I can only speak for the state in which I work, but our state operates as most others do.
On PAPER, a misdemeanor conviction on a DUI does not AUTOMATICALLY disqualify you. If it was a felony DUI due to aggravating circumstances, you'd be automatically disqualified.
That being said, a DUI conviction would be a very large hurdle to overcome while trying to become a police officer. The conviction is going to be highly scrutinized at many points in the hiring process and any one of those points could (and probably will) disqualify you. They'll look at it in your background investigation, They'll ask you about it in your board interview, It's going to come up in your polygraph exam, It's going to come up in your psychological evaluation...
So... no, it's not an AUTOMATIC disqualification, but it does have a high probability of keeping you from being hired. Be prepared to address the questions HONESTLY, frequently and in great detail.

It depends on the agency. They don't want to hire people that show very poor judgement and are weak to the point where they cannot control their behavior. The time frame of the offense will also play a factor. How "hard up" they are to hire someone is irrelevant.

You more then likely will not be taken. It would dependon the department you are applying for but more then likely you wont get hired unless it was a long time ago and they are really hard up. I was a FF/EMT and we would not hire anyone with something like that no matter how short up we were

Wally was likely a cop and yes around her you must have something they can hold over you before they give you the badge.
