Some emails I get have no picture, just a blank box with a small one in the upper lefthand corner that has a red x in it.

That is a blocked or an undeveloped photo on the page
simply place the cursor on the x --- right click it---when the context menu pops up--- left click --- show picture ---and
zip zap zowie----- thar be a photo here, matey !!!!

It's an HTML Email (like somebody sending you a web page), which is linking to a picture file, or trying to.

What you're seeing is either an email being linked to a picture that isn't there, or your email program is blocking remote images to protect you from viruses and other threats. You can usually temporarily turn off this feature, check your program's help.

because your email provider for security reasons blocks picture from showing in your mail. but some providers have a link that if you click it you can refresh page with showing pictures.

especially cases refresh button will restoration it, inspite of the incontrovertible fact that it is many times on the tip of the guy who published it. Like in Ebay. some photographs won't take place in any respect and can desire to enable the broker understand so they are able to restoration it.
