How do I stop a download or from continuing on a link I don't want after clicking on it?

The other answers will do the job. If you have landed on a page with a malicious script, this might not be available, and you may have to do control-alt-delete and end task on the browser.

Yes at the very top of your browser (if you're using Explorer or Netscape or any other normal version of a browser), there is a button with a red X. That is the stop button and it will instantly quit whatever action you began.

SImply disconnect to stop all internet communication.

If you are using a web browser and do not have pre-fetching enabled, clicking the "stop" button will stop the current page being loaded.
