well hunny your right in saying that when your sick you r blod sugars will run high but having them at over 400 willl only make you feel worse believe me I KNOW!! CALL YOUR DOCTOR!!! it doesnt matter tht its late this is his job & believe me he wouldnt want you to just sit around w your sugars reading over 400 I PROMISE he will be happy you called him to get advice. If you still dont want to wake him call your local ER room & they will be able of offer a littel biut opf advice b ut your own Dr woul dbe better because he prescribed your dosages & insulin regimin in the first place.....if you can ask him fo a sliding scale to have for situation sjust like this, it will show a range of readings & how much insulin to take per what ther eading is. But for your imediate question yes 10 units would probably be a good dose to start at, its enought that it should make a idfference but you may still need more ......keep testing thru the night. especially if you do more insulin to make sure that you didnt do too much & have a hypoglycemis reaction...PLEASE call your Dr him & you will be glad you did!!! HOPE YOU GET TO FEELING BETTER!!!!

10 Units? That's a lot if you are already taking insulin on a regular basis. You have no business playing with this. Call your doctor. Even if he's asleep, he probably has another doctor on-call. When you do talk to your doctor, get him to give you a "safe-range" for your blood glucose and procedures to follow when your blood glucuse is out of this range...higher or lower.
Normally, a sliding formula is used when blood glucose is high (over the acceptable range). This formula could be 50 over 100.....or any other combination according to your doctor's orders. Example: If blood glucose is 201, subtract 100 and divide by 50. This would give you 2. This means that 2 Units of Insulin would be needed in addition to your normal insulin (if you are taking insulin on a regular basis).
Get your doctor to explain this formula to you so you know what to do next time.
Note: If your blood glucose has gone as high as 400, something is not right here. Your Insulin should be keeping this under better control.....so your doctor would need to review your sugar level history (last 30 days) to see if you need to adjust the number of units that you need to be taking. Sometimes a slight adjustment is all that is needed to keep a safe range.
BUT: If you're sick and taking cough syrup or other medicines, this could be raising your blood glucose level. Be sure to watch your diet carefully and read the labels on all medicines (even if the pharmacist says it's ok for diabetics).
Do not fool around with this. Diabetes is serious, and consistently high blood glucose can cause you to feel bad, hallucinate, and cause damage to the heart and other organs......not a good thing!

You need to ask your doctor why he has not given you a "sick day care plan". That is his job.
Right now though, you need to bring down your BG quickly. In this case, your doctor will not mind if you call him. Your health is his responsibility. Furthermore, if he has not advised you regarding sick days, he DESERVES a 1 am wake up call...
You should have a "Correction Factor" or "Sliding Scale" to help you determine how much insulin to take. It is really hard to tell you how much insulin to take not knowing what type of diabetes you have, your weight, your daily dose total, other medications you take, how insulin sensitive you are, and other medical conditions, etc. just to name a few variables. This is something your doctor would have to determine.
How much insulin do you normally take to cover a high blood sugar? 10 units may put a thin Type 1 diabetic in a coma, but have no effect on an obese Type 2 with insulin resistance. For that reason, no one here can tell you safely that taking 10 units is OK. I will say that taking 2 or 3 units, and following up within an hour to see if you are at least beginning to drop is probably a good start. Drink lots of fluids to prevent dehydration, and remember to check for ketones.
Frequent testing and taking small amounts of insulin throughout the night is safer than injecting one massive amount. However, if you are a Type 2, you may *need* a very large amount of insulin to bring your blood sugar back into a safe range. I have no way of giving you proper advice.
If you are still that high after 2.5 hours, OR you have ketones, go to the ER for IV fluids and insulin if you cannot get a hold of your doctor. Many diabetics need to do this when they are severely ill. If you are vomiting, delerious, etc. go to the ER. Call the ambulance, do not drive.
If your blood sugar begins to come down, make sure you have a friend, etc. to monitor you throughout the night. Do not stay alone tonight. It is very dangerous to be ill with high blood sugars and a lack of insulin. You can go into a coma. You can also go into a coma if your blood sugar drops too much. Try taking a small amount of insulin, and test within 1 hour. Keep glucose gel, honey, ginger ale, or sugar on hand to treat any low blood sugar.
Above all, please call your doctor or go to a local urgent care clinic/hospital if you are ill and do not know what to do. Yahoo Answers cannot replace your doctor!!!

If you are sick and your sugar is over 400, then you need the docotr ASAP. It is the doctors job to take care of you. You waking up the doctor is way more easier than someone having to call 911 for you because you have went into some type of diabetic coma or some other possible bad reaction from a sugar this high? If you ate something when it reached this level, then I would say call the doctor or the emergency room and speak to someone there and let them advise you on whether or not to take the insulin or not. I was not sick, but my glucose level wnet to 400---but this was due to me not measuring out my food and I ate extremely too much food.
________You need attention to get this under control.
------SEEK EMERGENCY HELP NOW--------------
CALL 911 OR THE DOCOTR TO GET YOURSELF SOME HELP.

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

If I was to take 10 units of Humalog and my sugar was 400, that would bring it down to about 160 within about 2-3 hours. That has to do with my weight (225) though. No matter if you have a fever, you still need to keep your blood sugar in check.

You should definitely be worried. 400 is too high. And extreme thirst along with increased frequency of urination are all signs of Diabetes. Get yourself to a doctor asap, he can prescribe you medications or even insulin if its needed. Normal value should be within 70 and 110. It can go upto 140 after a carbohydrate-rich meal.
