What is the core reason you are a vegetarian?

I became vegetarian because I could no longer justify eating meat. I didn't need it to survive or to be healthy. I just ate it because it "tasted good." But I realized that wasn't enough.

How could my selfishness and desire for "taste" justify torturing, slaughtering of beings who could think and feel and suffer?

So I stopped.
And the more I learn, the better I know my choice is and the further I try to go.

Well reading the prior answers was something ... I guess... you want to know the core reason .. When I was 15 I started thinking as most teens do about life, reasons, etc... I thought about my dogs and birds at home ....and then thought about the pigs and chickens I had stopped to see on my way home from school.. I began to question and research and read everything I could .. the more I learned the more I had to come to a decision...this was the question I asked myself...... Am I eating animals to survive or because I like the way they taste ...... when I realized that I did not need them to survive ...I stopped that day .. 35 years ago and never looked back .. I knew it was the right and only decision I could make.. I didn't learn that vegetarians live about 8 years longer then meat eaters and healthier till years later ... the thought today of eating a dead animal would be the same as you attempting to chew on a rotting carcass ..or eating a human leg cooked.. it is repulsive to me because I do not see the hamburger on the bun..I see a dead bleeding cow with dead sad eyes..I am not trying to tell you anything more then how I actually see it today ..a little insight into a vegan ...

The main reason of a vegetarian to me is the animals that are put into pain and have to live through it. I'm sure you are a flesh-eater, and is asking that question because vegetarians are becoming popular. Well, animals have feelings too and don't deserve the pain they receive for their flesh. Also there are health benefits for being vegetarian such as you lose weight and keep it down, lower risk for having heart disease and other bad health problems.
Have you ever seen a animal slaughtered, especially when it comes chickens which are the #1 animals being slaughtered for their flesh. They put in big extremely crowded barns, where they are drugged up to grow faster. These are poor conditions for chickens to grow properly and some are even grown with disabilities(they are beaten to death). Then they transported to slaughter factories which is hell on wheels because they are crowded and even have bones crushed(and remember, they have to live through it). When they get to the factories, they are hung up-side-down and where their neck are slits. Now some still be conscious, and they have to live through being scalded alive with HOT WATER.
That is why I'm vegetarian to try to lessen or even end the slaughter of all animals for their flesh, fur, and skin.
Have a nice day! (@_@)

I am a vegetarian because I experienced serious health problems when I ate meat, chicken and dairy products.
I also love my animals and do not want to cause animals' suffering.
Good luck

Veggie girl 10+ years and counting! My core reason is I just don't believe anything should have to end it's life to give me a meal when there are so many other options. Animals may not be as "high a life form" as humans consider themselves, but they do know pain, they do know fear.

If a life form came down whom considered themselves to be "Higher" then humans.....let us ask ourselves.... how would we like to be cooked? lol.

Because I've never liked the taste of meat ... dirt would be tastier than a hamburger to me, any day.

because of the thought of an animal being sloutered and then cooked just goes right through me. just thinking of a chicken not knowing what is going on, then its head getting cut off just so we can eat it! no no... im not saying its wrong, and i know they were put on this earth for food, but everyone has their own opinions, and thats mine.

khorat k is right. In fact, let's take that one step further. Humans that eat cows are just nature's processed cows, which are (as he says) nature's processed grass. Let's eat humans.
