I did take metformin and did get diarrhea, this was just my body getting you to introduction to new medication. It did change when instead of taking on an empty stomach I took it with my meals.

I just started on the metformin on Feb 27 2007 and the diarrhea side effect is just now easing up... But ya at first i thought maybe i was getting sick till i read that lil paper.

I went to the hospital ER for diarrhea that was caused by Metformin. It was very bad. My doctor took me off of it.
I now take Actos 45

Metformin has its side effects. I didn't have the diarrhea, but for weeks my mouth and nose smelled like rotting meat. It was awful. If my dose is upped it happens again, but it eventually subsided.

Diarrhea is just a side effect of the medicine. It doesn't have anything to do with its work on the body to treat the diabetes. Other common side effects would be nausea, vomiting, headache and flatulence.
